has deborah really written to imdb

i read the replies made by "deborah" in this site and i am wondering if it`s really her or just a person pretending to be her, what is your opinion out there?

reply

I tend to think that this "Deborah" is real. She knew, for instance, that Deborah Baxter made three movies: AHWIJ, "The Wind and the Lion", and the almost-unknown "The Calling." Most related web sites and movie guides only mention the first two. Some only mention AHWIJ. This Deborah also gave some realistic-sounding info on how she was cast in "The Wind and the Lion." If this person is not the real Deborah (Emily), he or she has done a lot of research to pull off a largely pointless and profitless fraud (although I'm sure such things do happen, especially on the internet).

well if that is really "deborah" why haven`t she answered my direct accusation,i e-mailed a person that left her e-mail address in the hwij board claiming to be karen flack that co-starred with deborah in hwij, all i asked was for a autographed photo of her and she never e-mailed back and that was two weeks ago so what does that tell you?

reply

It might be that "Deborah" simply doesn't want to bother replying to a challenge. She would have little to gain and might even be a bit annoyed. I'm not saying I am absolutely certain the Deborah on the web site is real. I also wondered about the possibility of an e-imposter. When I weighed the evidence contained in the letters, I leaned toward her being the real McCoy. I don't know anything about Karen Flack, so I really can't comment on her.

I strongly agree with the theory that d-carr isn't really Deborah. Many reasons, including the fact she stated she is writing a book. As was suggested earlier, this would be a good format to connect with potential readers-those who would be interested in reading about her life. And with all the interest demonstrated here in a movie made over 40 years ago, you would think the real Deborah would have had more inclination to respond. Regarding Karen Flack, I did have an email exchange with her and think she is for real. She is just very busy, and likely lacked the time to reply. I would love to learn more about the details of making this film, and I'm not even into movies. Was really hoping "Experience" by Martin Amis, would connect a lot of the dots. There was 2 pages on his 'experience' in making the movie. Got to envy someone who's life has been so interesting that being part of a classic movie at 13 would rate so little space. Oh, and there is a website within a larger one on HWIJ, and I think the woman behind it is also the one who wrote the letters. Don't remember much now, but the name Carr figured in there somewhere. If anyone has more info on this I'd love to read about it.

Huge PS!!!-I'm posting this in on edit as I just saw that 'Deborah' has recently-within last 2 weeks-sent in a reply to this new thread. When I read the first I wondered about it being Hotmail.com instead of .co.uk, until I read the next one which was sent shortly afterwards. Anyone can check the posts of other users with just a click here, and if you do mine you'll see this is the only topic I have ever sent in anything about. I even considered creating a uk eddress-easy to do-and writing in saying I was the real Deborah, just to see if that would engender any responce from D-Carr. I WILL write her there, and knowing as much as I do from reading about the making of the movie and the replies from Karen Flack, feel certain I'll be able to determine if she's for real. After I do I'll post my apology or my 'gotcha' here for others still fascinated by a long standing attraction to an 11 year old girl. I sure hope it's really her, but remain a skeptic. We'll see. Stay tuned.

Deborah Baxter I and Deborah Baxter II are the same person. This is the real Deborah Baxter writing this. I made A High Wind in Jamaica when I was 11 years old then went back to the French Lycee in London. I then went to Drama School and was cast in The Wind and the Lion by John Milius who had enjoyed my role in AHWIJ. I got married at the age of 21 soon after The Wind and the Lion and then had 2 children. At that time the film industry didnt approve of having a family and continuing filming. I did continue after a few years and made several commercials, television sit coms (Harry Worth, Norman Wisdom, to name a few) then in 2000 was asked to play the Receptionist in the Calling by Beth Charkham (casting director). I would still like to work and I am currently writing a screenplay which I hope to have up and ready for raising finance at the end of the year.
Please believe me I AM her! I can send a copy of my CV if required...

Dear Deborah:

Glad to hear you have conviced another doubter about your identity. I hope you will consider writing a book about your acting experiences, especially AHWIJ. You are an actress who was placed in a unique position by virtue of the fame of your first movie. You are a cult heroine! I suppose that's a tough act to follow. I still am fascinated by Emily, as are many others. Good luck!

I feel quite remiss in not posting this sooner, but that's life. I was particularly sad to see Deborah had preceded me here and must have read my earlier post. In just the brief exchange I have had with her via her new eddress, I am convinced she is the same Deborah Baxter who enchanted all of us in that movie so long ago. Reading her replies to my questions, it became manifest that she had truly never realized the profound impact her performance had on so many young boys and men of that era. I still haven’t really sorted it all out in my mind, but I am hoping she will consent to have our exchange posted here so others still wondering about this vision from our past can learn more about who she was and has become. I almost felt guilty being the only one to read her words, believing as I do, so many others would want so very much to read them, if they knew and could. If there are others out there who like me check this board, post a reply and let her know the interest hasn’t faded, only dimmed with the passage of time. If only I can convince her to hone her writing skills by posting all her memories about starring in this classic movie, based on a novel voted among the top 100 in English in the last century. So let’s give her a big hand and get her back up here on stage where she belongs. Sorry for doubting you Deborah, but while you may not be “all that famous,” I suspect you have become somewhat of a “cult heroine” over the years, and your image looms even larger as you kind of dropped out of sight. I now understand, why you didn’t. I apologize deeply, as I said I would when convinced. And to others with doubts, I would say: trust me, this is really her, and she just never comprehended-she was 11-the connection she made with so many, who never forgot her.

If I may add my two cents to this rather old debate. . .

After looking at the various posts on this site and her own website, I think I believe Deborah Baxter is the Deborah Baxter. My main reason for this is. . . she's not a terribly well-known person, therefore what would she gain from pretending to be an actress who was in three films, a few TV shows, and thus likely unknown to 90% of people? This doesn't completely discount her being a fraud, but if she is, she's a very convincing one.

A similar thing happened on the Sergio Leone Board. A guy claiming to be Scott Tiler, the actor who played Robert De Niro's character as a boy in "Once Upon a Time in America", started an account and made a few posts on there. I went to his website and had a few e-mail exchanges with him. Some people thought he was fake, but again - who would want to imitate Scott Tiler?

No offense meant to either him or Deborah, both are fine actors, but are either of them well-known enough for a fraud to impersonate on the Internet? And furthermore, what exactly would they gain by it?

Why spoil the beauty of the thing with legality?
