Period TIME setting of the film

I am curious about the time period of this film. Can anyone tell me when this story takes place?

A clue may be in the type of ships seen and the clothing styles worn on screen. Also any historical people who may be mentioned can be a clue.

The year 1837 is mentioned regarding piracy, but when does the movie actually take place. Can anyone date the ships and clothing?

A Dutch steamer ship is seen in the movie. Can anyone date the uniforms?

In the book the story takes place some few years after the abolition of slavery in England and her colonies. That was 1833. My guess - for the book - the scene is about 1840.

The film is set in 1879 as is the novel!

reply

Hi! What was your source for this 1879 date?
I have seen a 1965 Press Book, or Pamphlet, saying that 1870 was the date the film centres around! Actually, 20th Century-Fox calls their pamphlet an "Exibitor's Campaign Manual".
Couldn't find any date reference in my readings of the novel.
Anyone else help out here?

Is 1879 not a litle late for Caribbean pirates? I thought that they had had their day by the early 19th century.

After 1837 is the earliest date for the film- in the court scene an Act of 1837 is referred to: 1870, going by ships and clothing is much too late, and even by 1840- the approximate date for ships and clothing- the pirates- even hapless leftovers like these- were vanished. THe book is set sometime in the 1820s- between the abolition of the slave trade and the abolition of slavery.
