Heroes of Telemark

The real ferry boat was replaced in another shot by an exact model copy about twenty foot long but the explosions looked wrong and out of scale when the rushes were viewed next day so the production had to try and refloat the model, unfortunately it had got wedged among the rocks underwater and it took a couple of months to retrieve it and then resink it with better explosions, this is why the snow had melted in the background of the second sinking.
The church scene with carols being sung was filmed in Rujkan church just outside the village, the church was made of hand carved wood and many years old, Cameraman Bob Krasker had used carbon arc lamps for the lighting and the heat set the timbers on fire after the filming had finished and the local fire brigade attempted to distinguish it by smashing in the main doors which caused an updraft and the whole building went up like a tinder box.
