I don't know if I'm thriller or frightened that this movie is coming out on DVD this month.

Baker is an extremely talented actress, but her movies from this period are soooo tacky and worthless (even though they made a lot of money).

I don't know what to expect. I've heard it's horrible...but is it unwatchable horrible??

reply

Just finished watching it (I rented it from Netflix), and I must say I ended up having it play in the background more than I could stay interested in watching it. It's odd for such a talented cast and great sets to be wasted on such an emotionless picture. I think everyone did the best they could, but it's just lacking overall.

Uggh. I just watched it, too : (

It makes a very fake story out of some of the elements of Jean Harlow's life, and invents much more. Basically, now it's a rags-to-riches tale about a pure soul who climbs to the top, then is ruined by all the monsters she finds there. Zzzzzzzzz...

This movie was prepared and shot in a rush, and obviously no one really thought out the story they were telling.

Carroll Baker is a gifted actress....but not in this swill.

reply

Neither Baker nor Lynley had the charisma and vitality of Harlow.

reply

Well, they are all different types of actresses from each other.

In her original review, Pauline Kael said, "Baker is about as talented as Harlow, but in different ways."

I would say that Carol Lynley is not as talented as Baker or Harlow, though. And Harlow certainly has a more naturally sensual quality than either of them. Harlow looked like she actually ENJOYED sex, while the other two actresses are a bit colder.

reply

But Harlow was funny! I've never seen either Baker or Lynley do comedy effectively.

reply

Mmmm....true. That's one thing I mean about her seeming to enjoy life more.

Carroll Baker is very funny in Baby Doll, but it's because she plays it completely straight.
