'Harlow' starring Carol Lynley?

Has any vintage film collector ever tracked down a video or DVD (or even Beta) copy of Carol Lynley's ultra-rare version of "Harlow" (1965)? It seems to be forgotten in the shadow of the more famous Carroll Baker version of "Harlow" (also '65).
I glanced through the offerings of that title on E-Bay, Half.Com, and Amazon, but if they have "Harlow" at all, it seems to be only the Baker version, never the Lynley version.-- Steven P Hill <[email protected]>

I think it's played on television a couple of times and some fans of Jean have seen it before. From what I hear, Carol looked a little more like Harlow and had the diction down pact but the script was just as bad as this one.

Perhaps the Lynley movie was more true to life.

Jean Harlow did not drink herself to death. She died from injuries caused from beatings from the man her family forced her to marry. This film set out to protect him.

Jean Harlow, didn't die from beatings and her family never forced her to marry anyone. When she was a teen, she contracted scarlet fever, which did permanent damage to her kidneys. Unfortunately, that simple truth wasn't sensational enough for this God awful film or the libelous fictional book written by her sleazeball agent Arthur Landau, who apparently needed to make a buck in his old age.

I saw a tiny bit of it on TV years and years and years ago. All I remember is it's in black and white, and Lynley is very very slim.

Here's one of the costumes. I can't believe it sold for just $1,700 because Nolan Miller is a pretty famous designer, and it would be all handmade, etc.

Few people would fit into it, I suppose, though.

I saw the Electronovision version of "Harlow" on Chicago's local television in the 1960s at least once. What I remember is Ginger Rogers as Jean Harlow's mom; she brought her alive. Carol Lynley, as I remember it, had some of the vocal issues that Ms. Baker did - a harsh voice, not nice to listen to. Here is information about the Electronovision films, which may or may not include clues as to their scarcity today. One of them, "The T.A.M.I. Show" has been shown and is available for sale. It had issues with legalities which made it very scarce to be shown.

It's on youtube.

That's the name the whole idea was it looked like live B & W or video tape TV, but it didn't the other film was Richard Burton doing HAMLET.
Silly seeing as many folks back then went to the movies to see color as most didn't have color TVs yet.

I've watched about half the Carol Lynley version by now, and although it has the production values of an episode of What's My Line? and looks like it was practically shot in someone's living room (!) at least that version has some energy.

The Carroll Baker version is just very...staid feeling. Like it's choked in its own powder and makeup, and can't breathe.

(Carol Lynley looks nothing like Jean Harlow, though. If anyone, she looks like Madeline Carroll.)

Saw this movie once (back in the 1970's on the old channel five in NYC). I didn't even see the whole thing but pieces of it. Liked Carol Linley, but Ginger Rogers looked more like Jean Harlow than she did.

reply

Ginger Rogers looked incredible in this film, far more beautiful than Carol Lynley, if a mature beauty! However, as with most of these films her look was very 60's, not the 20's and 30's.
