McGavin's Southern Accent

In the opening scenes, when Darrin McGavin is addressing the board of inquiry, he speaks with a very noticeable southern accent. It almost sounds like he is doing an impression of Foghorn Leghorn!

In the remainder of the movie, he speaks the way he normally does. No southern accent at all.

Wonder why he did that?
