Didn't love it right away. Now a favorite

As I wrote in title. Originally I wasn't very into this film. I loved psychedelic movies and early Fellini but this just didn't click. I had watched early Fellini and was ready for that realism. That with the addition of color and very apparent lip synch on the tracks gave this a strange spoof kind of feeling. (All Italians used the post synching, it just seems more pronounced in this film) But I found myself thinking about it for some time after. After going back to it I liked it more and more. It is wildly indulgent but that's sort of its charm. I think Roger Ebert's review is a great take on this movie.

As to the soundtrack, AMAZING! You have to find the version with the cover that looks like an outline of roll of film or something if you want the lady singing at the party.

I just watched this for the second time, & I loved it even more. I enjoyed it the first time, but I was tired & wasn't fully able to appreciate it. It really is a beautiful film. Amazing colour cinematography & lead performance from Giulietta Masina.

My experience is like yours...sort of. I count this as the first Fellini I ever saw, though the truth is it was 8 1/2. Thing is, I saw that at the age of 11! Our local theater had a short-lived European film festival, and somehow they let me in. The movie scared the bejaisus out of me! I'd never seen anything like it, and couldn't process. It was like being lost on an alien planet.

So I avoided Fellini until college, some 7 years later. At that point, I went to a screening of Giulietta, and just fell completely in love, both with it and Fellini as a whole. I now count it as my favorite of his films, one I re-watch yearly if not more often.

The interesting thing is, I saw every single one of his other films before I tried 8 1/2 again. Imagine my surprise when I discovered there's nothing frightening or "mysterious" about the film whatever. Of course, by that time I'd become totally versed in and comfortable with Fellini's later style. And naturally, I love it now.

But not quite as much as I do this movie.

I watched it with a friend who lists this among his favorite films and whose opinions I respect tremendously. I can't say I totally "got" it upon one viewing, but there's enough here to keep me coming back for more. I'll give this 8/10 for now for the tremendous imagery and hypnotic soundtrack, but I may well upgrade upon future viewings. Hat's off to a potential future favorite!

This is my second Fellini after his segment in "Spirits of the Dead". Yes- at first I thought it was just "pretty good". Now it's a staple in my classic DVD library ! I actually do not own many ":art" films--I'm mainly horror and grindhouse. But this movie cannot be dismissed.
