Addams family house

Does anybody know (or think) that the "Simmons haunted house" was the same house used for The Addams Family? It would be interesting because Vic Mizzy wrote the music and theme songs for both productions.

reply

It wouldn't surprise me as studios often re-used the same houses on their respective lots for different movies and television shows.

reply

Definitely the same house, or 'mansion' !

Actually, it never really existed.

The exterior was a Matte Painting, used over and over.

The 'Simmons Mansion' in TGAMC was a set facade house built for the movie 'So Goes My Love' in 1946 and used in movies, tv shows, and commercials ever since. The house was located on 'Colonial Street', Universal Studios residential set street.

That house in the Addams Family series was a combination of a real home (the bottom), and matte painting (the top). While both house designs were of a similar architectural style, they were not the same house.

The Simmons Mansion, or the 'Allison Home' as it is know by the studio, remained largely recognizable as the same house seen in TGAMC until 1988 when it was altered the Tom Hanks film 'The Burbs'. To modernize the house for the film, the oval window in the tower (organ loft in TGAMC) was removed. Other details were also altered to make the house look a little less 'victorian'.

In 2004, the Allison home received it's most drastic alterations to date when the entire street was revamped for use in the 'Desperate Housewives' TV series. The old Simmons Mansion was now the home of Gabrielle Solis (Eva Longoria). The distinctive tower top was replaced with a shorter peaked roof, and many other details again were changed, including the color (now yellow).

Actually the Simmons house and the Addams family house are NOT the same house, but the Simmons house and the Munster house ARE one and the same

reply

NO, actually the Simmons mansion and Munster house are of very different architecture- the Munster house was actually next door to the Simmons mansion (just to the left)

The Simmons mansion is the Psycho house on the Universal lot. The Munsters house is currently on Wisteria Lane and is used to house the gay couple on Desperate Housewives.

reply

The simmons mansion and the Psycho house are two different sets- although they look (or did before Desperate Housewives) very much alike.

Makes sense! I always thought that that was the Simmons house beside the Munsters. Cool to know that it actually was.

The first time I saw the Simmons house was in a Universal movie called "Bright Victory," starring Arthur Kennedy. I recognized it immediately. It's also been seen on Thriller a few times, and I think even Leave it to Beaver. You can always tell the Universal backlot by the streetlamp globes. They haven't changed in over 65 years.

It was not the Addams Family House. It's been reported that it was the house from 'The Munsters' also which is also incorrect.
The Mr. Chicken mansion is actually not the Munster house, although they are next door to each other on the new Colonial street, with the Munster house on the right. Originally they were on the old Colonial street, near New York street and Courthouse square, with the Munster house to the left of the Mr. Chicken mansion, and that is where this movie was filmed.
