Liesendorf ages but Kawai doesn't...?

When we see Kawai (the Japanese naval officer) after the war, he doesn't look a day older than he did in 1945. However then we see Dr. Liesendorf (the German scientist)...and he looks ancient. What gives? The guy looks about a hundred years old while Kawai looks like he could run a marathon. Talk about not aging gracefully! Poor Liesendorf sure got the short end of the stick...

Kawai has some gray hair around the temple regions. The scientist was older than him in the flashback, so it makes sense that he'd be more advanced in his years in the present.
