A REAL Movie?

How did Steven Spielberg make this an official movie? Obviously it is, since it's on imdb, but when he made it, wasn't it just on a home movie camera? no studios or distriutors or anything? is it even possible to release a movie you made officially without any kind of professional backing? lol What distinguishes this movie from just a regular home video?

It was released into a local theater in Spielberg's hometown. Look it up on Wikipedia. They give you a good amount of info on this film.
