140' ?

An amateur film, made at 18 an last 140 minutes? That's interesting.

Where we can see this?

reply

I didn't even know about the existence of this film until I read about it in a movie magazine a few days ago.It was apparently the very first Spielberg movie to make a profit earning a princely $100 when played at his local cinema at it's "world premiere!"
Now I also want to view it to see if there are any clues as to the budding genius this guy would later become.

reply

actually... he was 16 ;-)

Steven Spielberg is from 1946 and the movie is from 1964 and gilnor83 says that he was 16 years of age. Are you sure he waited 2 years before 'releasing' he's first full movie ?

reply

Anyway, always "Amblin" is credited as the first short, and "Jaws" (sometimes "Duel" as the first full lenght movie

reply

No matter how you spin this, no way is "Jaws" ever counted as his first feature-length film. What about "The Sugarland Express"?

Spielberg was born on December 18th, 1946 and this movie was first released on March 24th, 1964. March 24th, 1964, is just 3 months, 6 days after Spielberg turned 17. So it's not a stretch to say he probably filmed the movie when he was still 16. I doubt he could have started filming the movie after he turned 17 and have it finished and ready for release 3 months later.

In an article by one Joseph McBride http://www.boxoffice.com/may97story1.html he states that Spielberg was 17 when he completed the movie.

It kinda makes sense. What I think is, he started making the movie when he was 16; he completed it when he was 17; and it premiered in the Phoenix Theatre when he was 18.

I read in either Empire or Total Film (UK) that he made this over a collection of weekends.

It doesn't exist anymore, huge parts of it have been lost. You can glimpse at parts of it in a couple of docs on spielberg.

reply

Actually, it does exist.

Steven Spielberg's archivist just found it a year or so ago. I don't think it'll be released on DVD, but who knows?

Come on Spielberg, it's not like you're busy, put your early work on DVD.

Save me Eddy. Purrrrrrrrrrrrrrleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeese.

reply

You say it exists, but words mean nothing if you cannot prove it.
