This is one of my favourite horror films. And a large part of that has to do with the sheer look of the thing. The expansive cinematography, the subdued colours, the lavish gothic sets.
Everything else is wonderful as well. The acting and the music. Terence Fisher really was a brilliant filmmaker.

It really is one of the better ones. I only wish a nice, restored version would get released on DVD or Blu-ray. I have the Anchor Bay release, but the picture looks faded and while it's widescreen, it's not anamorphic widescreen.
shareYes, that's a bit odd to me; it's an unusual aspect ratio for a Hammer film, but the black bars are part of the image, which suggests a slightly half-assed transfer.
However, I do like the slightly grainy look to the image. Makes it more cinematic, I think.

I am not too keen on the wide screen version. I want a full screen one. I have been referred to a site called http://www.sumogorilla.com/, which has a full screen version of this movie. I may buy it from there and sell my wide screen one.

A beautiful movie indeed. I only wish I could get a darned FULL SCREEN version on DVD, as the one I have is only wide screen and, as such, shows up very narrow on my telly!

I agree with you. The castle was one of the most beautiful sets I have seen in a horror film. This was a wonderful film and one of the best of the entire Hammer Dracula series.

I too loved the cinematography and film sets! The grainy texture, darkness, and colour made the film very atmospheric and reminiscent of old times (pre-1900's). Beautiful amalgamation of film style.
Not to mention, the actresses acting in this were gorgeous back in the day! :)
The look of the castle is too new.
