Why can't dracula speak in this?

I know the rumour / legend is Mr lee protesting a bad script, but is there an in universe reason.

reply

Well, Hammer Draculas starring Lee always portrayed the Count as almost reptilian.... a true cold blooded monster much less human than Lugosi's Count..... casual conversation irritates him..... that's my take anyway

reply

That's as good an explanation as i think i'm ever going to get. pretty much covers the reason.

I always assumed Mr. Lee was exhausted from talking out of both sides of his mouth about how much he hated playing Dracula while accepting wads of cash to continue doing just that.

reply

Dracula didn't have any reason to speak to the tourists. They knew he was a monster when they first laid eyes on him and he knew it too.

wads of cash ? Are you kidding me ? He only received 1000 pounds for Horror Of Dracula... They tried getting him to do a sequel for years and years but he refused, especially because there was no real sequel to Stokers book... They even had to change the script for Brides of Dracula at the last minute because Lee pulled out. Horror of Dracula had been so commercially successful that Lee refused to play the role again unless it was for a substantial amount of money. In many cases Warner Bros refused to distribute or fund the Dracula films unless Lee stared in them. In the end, after 8 years and a pseudo sequel, Brides of Draucla I'm referring to, they made. They finally worked out a deal with Lee and a bunch of other actors where they paid them to star in 2 movies, so Prince of Darkness and Rasputin the Mad Monk. They even used several of the same scenes in both movies. Lee says that there was some dialog but it was such rubbish that he absolutely refused to repeat it. According to one of the writers, Jimmy Sangster, Lee was being forgetful when he said that because there was no dialog, mostly because they didn't want to pay Lee as much as he wanted...

Supposedly Jimmy Sangster who wrote the screenplay didn't bother to write any lines for Dracula since he felt a vampire really wouldn't have anything to say to the living. Just wants their blood. This contradicts Lee's claim that he was indeed written a line or two but felt they were rubbish and never said them.

Lee has claimed that he has tried to sneak in lines from the novel, being an admirer of it. He did get to say them in Franco's Count Dracula, which had nothing to do with the Hammer Series. They were the best parts of the film.

Dracula isn't one for small talk!

reply

As others have already pointed out, the most likely reason is because the protagonists pretty much know he’s a vampire as soon as they encounter him. He has no reason to make conversation with them.

The interesting thing about Lee’s Dracula is that he is basically a demonic creature posing as a man. He only talks when he’s trying to blend in or appear human, so as to deceive his victims.

Its a plot hole
