Komarovsky's fall on stairs

Was it planned? ...or did Rod Steiger really slip and fall while filming and the director decided to keep it in?

Steiger is such an excellent "method" actor, I think he probably put that in himself, because it would be natural for someone who has just tossed down two vodkas, is upset, and being pushed down snowcovered stairs, to do just that.

One thing that always gets me about that scene is the loss of the sugar. Obviously neither Lara nor Zhivago want to accept it, but what strikes me is how precious it must be at that time. In the midst of winter during a period of extreme hardship sugar would be worth it's weight in gold. It clearly is rare and expensive due to the very fact that Komarovsky wishes to "sweeten" his offer with it, if I may.

Something else that gets me is the fact that it seems like Victor has been in the apartment before, although I doubt it from the story line. He walks in and makes himself at home (which is just his style). But he goes around the corner to look in the mirror when he probably shouldn't know where it is. Unless he just guessed that there would be a miror in the bedroom.

One more thought about that scene...I think Victor had been drinking before he went to Lara's. This is a tough old Russian who has put away a lot of vodka in his time. To get that tipsy from just two swigs, and so recently after taking those swigs, doesn't stand up. The bottle is not even close to being full, maybe he was getting his courage up to approach the couple.

It's a good point ... but maybe he had had scarcely anything to eat since who knows when? (Just chiming in.)

I think he slept and fell and they kept it in, no question.
