My mum's favourite film...

I was only a child when my mother mentioned this film was her favourite and encouraged me to watch it so one Christmas it was on BBC and we both sat together, now with me being a boy of about 8/9 and just been introduced to Star Wars and this being a love story I'm thinking "yeah great.....not" but after only a few minutes it grabbed hold of me and I fell under a sort of trance at everything I was seeing and hearing. The complete beauty of it captured me and for nearly forty years it's never let go. She had other favourites like Fiddler On The Roof and Gone With The Wind but this was fermly at the top of her list. Today is Christmas Eve and my mum's been gone five years but it's on channel five so I'm taking time out to sit and enjoy it once more. I must get a copy on Blu-Ray and try to learn more about this epic because in a day of information everywhere it's available.

There's a lot to be said for settling down to a good sweeping epic. Dr Zhivago, Lawrence Of Arabia, Gone With The Wind, Once Upon A Time In The West etc. For me, it's usually the music that provides the most context for nostalgic viewing.
