Did Omar Sharif and Julie Christie got along while filming?

I seen old interview they only mention working with David Lean but no mentions of there screen together. They got along off-screen?

Omar Sharif provides a commentary and an extra feature on the Blu-Ray, and from what he says there I inferred that he was a bit jealous of Julie Christie and how much admiration she engendered. He mentions that he would hear comments off-set about how great Julie's performance was, or "Wow, did you see Julie Christie today!" and the like, and no one ever said anything similar to him or congratulated him on how he was doing. He said he took that to heart and became somewhat depressed.

According to Sharif, he eventually went to David Lean with his concerns and DL reassured him that he was supposed to be a passive character in the film, mainly an observer through whose eyes we see the events unfold, and that's why he doesn't get to "do" much, but that when the movie was finished, viewers would remember him when they thought back on the film.

This trivia site here (which may not be a reliable source) suggests that Sharif and Christie didn't spend much time together off set:

... but while they were apparently never close, there's no suggestion I've ever heard that there was any bad feeling between them. Sharif was married at the time and perhaps didn't flirt as much as he famously did later on.

Thank you.

Whatever the actors' feelings for each other, they were completely convincing as characters passionately in love.

I remember reading that Julie Christie found filming a bit of a slog, and the person she bonded with was her character's fiance' - you know, the guy with the glasses. Per the notes of hers that were published, they had more in common in terms of age, mindset, attitude towards show business, etc. I don't mean they hooked up, just that he was pretty much her only buddy on set when they were on location.

Yes, he and Julie were working class Brits, and Julie had played opposite him in a small role in "Billy Liar", where Tom played the title character.

She soon became much more famous than he, but she has always been fond of him, and thankful for, in effect, helping make her a star.
