Hi, can you help me please..

I really apreciate a good cinema and i am always looking for a great experience. Can anybody tell this: Has this movie passed a time test and is this trully that epic and is it really that good? BTW i dont like American propaganda type movies.

I love this movie! It holds up if you're watching it for what it is - when it is. I really like the character development and how they come in and out of each other's life throughout this 3 hrs epic. If you like oldies, watch this! Good luck.

"American propaganda" -- sheesh. What propaganda? Hollywood makes movies to make money -- not to feed propaganda to the masses. The story was written by a Russian, and it does not whitewash the revolution.

You can find more brutal depictions of the Revolution coming out of Russia itself. E.g. The Checkist, E.g. Burnt by the Sun.

Or you could watch any movie made in the USSR during the 30's or 40's, where the purpose was not to make money. That's where you'll find your propaganda.

Sorry for late reply. Tertle thank you for your honest opinion. Razzbar i thank you too but i just have to say that there are plenty of american propaganda movies starting with Zero Dark Thirty being most recent and counting to early 20th century Birth Of A Nation. Anyway i will hit a play button and watch Doctor Zivago now.

You can accuse any movie of being "propaganda", based on your bias.

reply

It's not American propaganda at all! It is a Russian novel and the movie is British.

Anyways... yes, it stands the test of time. I just watched it on Sunday - the 45th anniversary Blu-ray edition, and it was SPECTACULAR.

One of the truly greatest epics in film history - a personal story of divided love told to the backdrop of the Russian revolution. a true epic by definition and one of the great films of all time.

Look beyond the acting and the romantic story, and you will see some of the cleverest camerawork and editing used in a movie.

IMDB says the movie is American, British and Italian.

I've wondered how country of origin is determined. I guess it's the combination of Producers, Film companies and the Studio that releases it to the public...?

reply

Sounds about right. David Lean is most definitely British.

Hitler! C'mon, I'll buy you a glass of lemonade.

I am watching this tonight for probably the 100th time, on TCM. Every time, I see something new. Tonight, it was when Yuri decided to go to Yuriatin (sp) because he knew Lara was there. The scene was then filled with daffodils, aka narcissus. The ancient Greek allegory of Narcissus is about a man who was so beautiful that he became hopelessly entranced with his own reflection in a river. The gods saw this as a sin and turned him into a flower that always seeks it's own reflection or the sun - the daffodil.
This movie has so much deep symbolism that I could easily watch it another 100 times and not see everything. One of my all time favorites.

It was on again today, and I totally agree with you. Every time I watch, I see something I didn't notice before, and I've seen it umpteen times.

Same here and today I noticed for the first time while watching it again on TCM that Yuri is reminded of Lara when his wife is pounding the iron over and over on the clothing/ironing board. Its the sound that gets his attention, sparks the memory.
I wondered why Lara made the noise she did, it seemed a little too loud considering Yuri works on writing, creating and no doubt the unnecessary noise isn't appreciated - but Yuri never complained. A bit contrived I'd say to set up the scene. Not a complaint, just an observation.

I would say it is epic

Not sure what "American Propaganda" movies are??

Are they better or worse than the 3rd world countries, you live in, movies??
