'Do not tax my patience. child!' What's your favorite line/scene?

My favorite line was just after Tallulah slaps Stephanie for trying to send the postcard. She says, "Do not tax my patience. child!" I was really scared of her at that point.

What did you like best?

reply

When Tallulah storms into the room: "SO! within minutes of my forgiving you! THIS! THIS!!" (postcard) and the famous slap.. this scene was for real, very real-she almost passed out in this one, it was later revealed!

You are so right! I can't believe she hit her that hard! That's real "old school" acting for you! Ladies like Ms. Bankhead had a true commitment to their craft. I'd love to see the movie again!

Stay well,

Sheila

I didn't think the script afforded much opportunity for campy speech. God knows, Tallulah was very capable of camp it when she had the opportunity. I suspect she might have wanted to improvise (the script is hardly a work of art, so why not). But, this movie (disappointingly in my view) was played pretty straight. My guess is that the director kept a tight leash on the actors. Pity.

I thought some of Tallulah's broad gestures and facial expressions were a bit campy. When she first shows Patricia to the guest bedroom, her exit was funny: she almost races to the door and instantly shuts it behind her. The intent was not to permit Patricia to get a word in, but I still thought it was funny the way Tallulah played it.

I do remember one mildly funny line: When Patricia asks for salt, Tallulah replies that food in her house is served as God intended - "unadorned." An odd word choice to describe seasonings.

Tallulah: "He died in a caaaar accident!!!"

When Tallulah sees the red car and steps back, lmao.

My favorite line was when Mrs Trefoile and Anna are in the attic and force Pat to write a note explaining her long absence:
Mrs Trefoile: "Shall I slash your face, child? Shall I cut it up? No man will never have you then. You will be safe with Stephen."

RETRO FOREVER!

like Don't tax line as well.

as far as her campiness, remember Mrs. Trefoile was a broadway star (movie star as well?), and she probably couldln't shake her actions. that's how i took it.

also loved how she was able to put on the lipstick in a rage without a mirror. tha was to show us she was actually a weak woman.

During the first Bible reading, when Joseph was really getting into the reading, but then we see that he had his Bible upside down and Anna noticed it and turned it right side up for him.

I like the Bible reading scenes. Mrs Trefoile's droning voice. Everybody dropping off to sleep. Joseph, holding a candle, yawning with his "Praise the Lord" response. Pat's rumbling stomach. Mrs Trefoile pointing a gun at her captive while reading from the good book. Great stuff.
