Anna is one ugly woman

I'm not kidding and I don't mean to be so mean but Anna is sickly looking. Her hair looks greasey and her face looks oily. She looks like she could use a shower.

She's passed so we should be respectful, but I found her to have naturally good looks even if on the tom boyish side. She has pasty skin and dark hair and looks similar to r and b singer Lisa Stansfield. When she passed the leading man type in the grocery store I thought they would hit it off. In real life, I could see her in a relationship where she is with a guy who is striking which would balance out her look. I found her okay looking and fit which is good.

One's allowed to give a negative opinion whether a person is alive or dead, but in this case the conclusion of "ugly" is monumentally undeserved. I see the comment centered more on greasy hair and oily skin, rather than the woman beneath. One has to look beyond these surface elements if one makes a pronouncement of "ugly," and concentrate on the woman's physical look and features. Of course the sad character of Anna was meant to look unglamorous and homely. While not beautiful, I thought she looked rather striking, and kept thinking, why is such a good-looking woman like that trapped in a terrible and demeaning job for so long? Why would she be married to such a loser of a husband? She was anything but "ugly."

Perhaps if they took away some of the shine off her face. Just a little powder on the brow and cheek bones.

I agree. Quite striking.

^^ Gluck-3 I agree.

Her character was meant to be dowdy she is almost too pretty to play but it worked.

I think when you're an actress, you leave yourself wide open for criticism of all kinds. Still less than classy to point that out, though, even all these years later.

She had very strong features, but she was also an alcoholic which can sometimes has an affect on physical appearance.

That's so sad. And true. Case in point: Lindsay Lohan. What a waste.

Cut the woman some slack. I think her look means she nailed the character.

1. Actors are cast in certain roles for a reason; often because their look fits the part.

2. In addition, makeup, clothing, and sometimes other things like false teeth, wigs, different noses, etc. are used to further enhance the look of the character.

Anna is an unhappy woman in an unhappy marriage with a philandering husband who ignores her. She has a mentally disabled adult son and works for a cheap, bitter, tyrannical old woman. If that weren't bad enough, she also lives there in a gloomy, depressive house with her and has for many years.

Anna must cook and eat unseasoned, bland, mushy, slop; of which there's little variety. She likes 'pretty' things but is not allowed to look in a mirror, adorn herself or focus on appearances in any way.

There's no amusement inside that house; no joy; no life; and outside it, she has no friends. Everyday she lives the same dreary, miserable existence. The only break in the monotony that is her life comes when Patricia arrives (and whoever they might have 'hosted' before).

She has no reason to smile, to laugh, or be happy and there's nothing promising on the horizon. That kind of lifestyle will takes it's toll on a person - in her soul and on her face. Even if Anna had been an exceptionally beautiful woman, those days are gone. Under current conditions her looks are her last priority. Like her life, her looks have been neglected; she has suffered and it shows.
