Great performance by Julie Christie

I loved her performance. The role seemed rather ordinary and unremarkable at first. But as the movie progressed, I was blown away by Julie's performance. Great performance! The movie itself was quite good too.

Yeah, this vapid woman she plays, comes quite extraordinarily nuanced and occasionally even self aware. The Academy managed to get it very-very right in fact two years in a row, awarding two of the finest female lead performances ever - this in 1965 and Taylor in Virginia Woolf in 1966. Such a thing does not happen very often.

Agreed. Anyone who thinks Julie Andrews should have beaten Julie Christie for the '65 Best Actress Oscar either

a) doesn't know acting
or
b) is deifying The Sound of Music because of its upbeat vibe . . . . as contrasted with the depressing nihilism of Darling's lead character (and its warning that the mass media/celebrityverse is creating monsters).

Julie Christie is simply flawless as Diana. She completely dominates every scene she is in.
