Werner Klemperer billing -- Was that a joke? (SPOILERS!)

Careful -- possible spoilers below!

After just watching the movie for the first time (on the recent TCM Selects double-feature DVD with THE NIGHT WALKER), I was flabbergasted that the monster ("Malaki") was listed as being played by Werner Klemperer (everyone's favorite Commandant from "Hogan's Heroes").

I can't believe Universal was serious. I mean, first of all, you never once see Malaki's face, which is always hidden under a hood -- so he could easily have been played by an extra or, more likely, a stunt man, since he does have to do some pretty fancy footwork at the end.

But, more to the point, whoever was physically inside that monk's robe with the hood up, there is no way in hell that was Werner Klemperer's voice (one of the most recognizable of all time) saying Malaki's lines on the soundtrack. In fact, I am 95% certain that the voice we hear is that of Norman Lloyd (star of ST ELSEWHERE on network TV for years -- and long-time friend and associate of Alfred Hitchcock... whose company, Shamley, just happened to produce this TV pilot for Universal (originally under the title of THE DARK CLOAK). Not only did Lloyd act (brilliantly) in two or three of Hitchcock's early American films, he later became the producer on many episodes of Hitchcock's own two TV series. The two men were, like, thick as thieves and it would make perfect sense for Lloyd to have dubbed in the voice for a character whose face is never seen in the film.

So, why on earth would someone with the résumé of Werner Klemperer want to accept a role that never allowed his face to be seen -- or his voice to be heard?
