Why did Pat escape in her underwear?

So - why didn't Pat put some clothes on before escaping from the mental institution?

Seems if you've just escaped from an asylum, and you're trying to stay below the radar - running around in public in your underwear isn't exactly the best way to accomplish this.

And I'm pretty sure they do have clothes - even in mental institutions in 1965.
