Rental Copy vs. Sale Copy?

I rented The Cincinnati Kid on Netflix just the other day. I liked it for sure. It was a nicely shot film with a fantastic ensemble cast. And you can’t get too much better than Norman Jewison in the late 1960s.

However, I do have one aching question. This is not about the film itself. This is about the Warner Home Video DVDs (in the USA) made in 2005. On the copy I rented from Netflix, I realized that it said in small print: "Rental Only - Not For Resale". This irks me. I’ve not once noticed a DVD with this disclaimer written on it by the distribution company, or any company. And I am quite a movie nut, I own a lot of DVDs but I rent many more. Is this simply one of those old marketing ploys to have people purchase a copy? Like some magazine saying "collect all four collectible covers!"

Has anyone here rented The Cincinnati Kid Warner Home Video "Rental Copy DVD" (US Region 1) and then bought the "Sale Copy DVD" later on? If so, what is the difference? Is there any difference?

I live in Sweden and it is quite common the "only for rent" label. other differences can be that the rentals discs have a blank cover, i mean no picture on the disc. And if the release is a standard double disc the rental will include the movie disc only.
