I am from America and I watched most of the movie thinking that Superintendant Newhouse was the leader of the nursery. In America our leadership councils for school districts are "Superintendants." Then at the end my husband said, "I think he's a leader in the police force." Was that the case-- that the nursery brought in Newhouse very early in the story and he hand no connection with the nursery at all but was simply a policeman in a high leadership position?

Yes, that's correct - he is a senior police officer.

I watched other British films and I've heard the term superintendant used referring to police. They use different terminology from America such as the constable and commander, while in us it is officer and captain.

Also inspector is a term I've never heard used in the U.S. . It probably means investigator or detective. Although I think UK has the term detective.

In San Francisco the still call Detectives "Inspector". A holdover from the 1800's.

Superintendent is a rank in most English speaking countries.

A Superintendent is senior to an Inspector but junior to a Commissioner.
