Crimson Tide anyone.......?

I'm a lover of classic film, caught this movie on TCM tonight and totally was intrigued by it. Funny thing is I usually reserve my Saturday evenings for horror films, but simply could not turn the channel. I actually thought I was lucky and caught what I thought at the time was the original film for 'Crimson Tide'. Seeing Sidney in a navy film, well let's just say I immediately thought Denzel and Gene. At any rate I realized it was a different story-line, and damn good one. The ending left my eyes and mouth wide open, thus prompting me to come to imdb.com to research it.

So I was just wondering if this film was in anyway inspiration for 'Crimson Tide'?
