I seem to remember a scene in this movie where...

... the U.S. forces are trying to take an "enemy" beach, the U.S. and the "opposing" forces mistake each other for enemies, the enemy ceases fire, attempts to surrender but the U.S. forces, suspecting they may not be enemies, refuses to accept their surrender, saying words to the effect of,

"You surrender only to the enemy. If you are enemies, fight us. If you're allies, join us!"
Then the opposing forces throw down their weapons, run out onto the beach, greet the U.S. forces with joy and there's a celebration between them as they recognize each other as allies and join forces. If this scene is not in this movie, what war movie is it in?

Be like Robin Hood. Steal from the rich and KEEP IT!

I remember that scene. It was definitely NOT in Battle of the Bulge. I'm pretty sure it would have been describing one of the landings in Operation Torch when the Americans went ashore in an area held by the Vichy French. I think they said something like: "If you are Boche, then fight us. But if you are Frenchmen, join us!" If I had to guess the movie I'd say it was The Big Red One. If I remember right the Americans could not be sure up until the very last moment what the French were going to do. In fact, in some other areas the French did resist, which resulted in short, but bloody fighting. But the Americans and French have a pretty long history of friendship, and for the most part the fighting was relatively light between the two forces.

Many thanks. I saw the movie I described on television. If I'm not mistaken, THE BIG RED ONE was in theaters around 1979 and featured Mark Hamill. How soon after that was BIG RED ONE shown on television?

I think I first saw it on cable in the early '80's. Again, I'm not sure the scene is in there. But the scene definitely is supposed to be describing Operation Torch (that much I'm sure of.)

reply

Without any doubt, The Big Red One.

Agreed. The invasion of North Africa.

Sounds like Big Red One - and the landings at Anzio

reply

Wrong movie, that was from the Big Red One.
