Could a movie like "The Battle of Algiers" be made today?

The movie begins in anytown, USA. Introducing the main character as an angsty, but typical American young man. Then the movie takes us down his path from converting to Islam, leaving the US, then joining Daesh (ISIS).

I dont think this movie would get a wide release in the US in 2016.

Alternatively, it could provide an ethnic lead like TBoA. However, making a movie set in Iraq about an Iraqi who becomes a terrorist will absolutely not get a wide release in the US (lack of interest).
