A great film

*Note: some spoilers!

I can't believe so many don't see the excellence in this film. There have been statements like, 'It didn't realize it's full potential' or 'It was slow' or 'It's about a guy who just can't get it together'.

Not so.

It's somewhat Chekovesque. It's a slice of life, the sad and slightly tragic life of a woman who had some bad shots thrown at her. The up side is she bounces back, and you feel that she's going to make it okay, but dammit! How sad the road she's traveled. McQueen's iconic presence takes the stage, but the story is about Georgette and Margaret Rose.

That's just a quick take on it, but note the realism in the dialogue, how you don't "notice" it, even when viewed today. So many films have dialogue that jumps up and shouts, 'You-hoo, here I am!.' Note the powerful POWERFUL tension with Miss Kate and her hold on Henry, even after he's an adult. Also note the subtleties in Mulligan's direction, the close-ups, the lean camera work, the smooth and patient dissolves from one scene into another.

Okay, yes, the 'not at all like McQueen's voice' choice was bad, along with his less than adequate portrayal of 'singing.' But that aside, you have a film that has a raw grit and power that few films have ever achieved.

No, this was a great film. Watch it again with a more attentive eye and I think you'll agree.

Excellent review. I think it should have focused more on Lee's character instead of making it a McQueen movie

All I can really add is that even in plain clothes with a dull hairdo and little makeup, Remick was still stunning.

Well there is some solid pro talent involved behind & in front of cameras.
Ernest Laszlo is major artist responsible for the look. Shot b/w like a major
still photographer. Some moments play off Dorothea Lange images of mother - daughter. Laszlo captures the starkness of the location. I mean who wouldn't want out of there.
The film's story line also is a product of its creative time. There's the feel of Brando, Dean, and b/w films like The Fugitive Kind, Psycho which used the European style of direct light and shadow. Mockingbird was still fresh in the air too.
As to cast check how Ruth White was in several related films of an independent nature. Don Murray handled a sideline approach well mixing minor films with some majors as the good everyman not upstaging a lead.
Can't imagine there was much large teenage market for this kind of 'adult' concept film for Friday, Saturday night dating. Labor of love by the group.
Certainly left us one for the ages.

Don't leave out the screenwriter (To Kill a Mockingbird) Horton Foote.

He should have been fired. Between the writing and directing, this film was just painful to sit through. Others commenting here have tried to put honey on this turd, but I didn't get the impression that every scene was supposed to filled-in by the viewer's imagination.

The irony is that the actors are great, and so is their acting in this picture. One of Hollywood's premier film score composers creates some of the worst music I've ever heard, played by excellent musicians. The photography is superior, but rigidly static and with very poor continuity between shots.

It's mind-boggling how great this film COULD have been, but it falls horribly short on so many levels it's hard to know where to begin. And it's not because of McQueen's lip-syncing abilities!

I watched this last night in HD, what a great film! Steve McQueen is so very handsome
The old lady really looked dead in her bed...very creepy
It's a wonderful film in black in white of a very flat Texas landscape

BTRMF is about as boring as film can get. After this, one must look to Ed Wood or Andy Warhol for cinematic sleeping aids.

Guess there's no accounting for taste.

I recorded it several months ago. I got around to watching it today. I really enjoyed the movie.

Agreed. This film was quite touching. Steve McQueen and Lee Remick were both excellent in their roles. Moreover, Henry's struggle to surmount the demons of his past and go straight as well as his burning desire to make something of himself through his music gives this film a wrenching poignancy.
