great film

After enjoying this film I have two points: Why wasn't Glen Campbell given Steve McQueen's role? Was it because GC was well on his way to alcolism and other ills?
I believe the whole story was about the "baby" The song alludes to the fact that life's dreams fall to the realities of life.
Henry was a direct result of no love and affection from the spinster old lady who just wanted him as another possession.
The lack of affection showed rightaway when Henry & Georgette met after so many years.
As the story progressed you could sense that Henry wanted to love and be loved but didn't know how.
The attempt at singing by McQueen was merely a side note to the story. Whether Henry had talent was incidental.
What happens is it's easy to judge a film made back then with todays critical eye.
Also remember that this film was made during one of the saddest days in American history, November 22, 1963.
So in an ironic twist of fate this film was a metaphor for the crushed dreams of the country shot down on the streets of Dallas Texas.
