does anyone know how Kurosawa did the well shot?

Was it really a well with the reflection at the bottom? I tried to look for a cut or a camera in the reflection, but I couldn't see one. How could it have been lit and filmed so well? The "commentary" the dufus was reading mentioned nothing about the technical side behind the shot.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if it was actually shot in the well. It would be really really really hard to do, but since when did that ever stop Kurosawa? : )

this has baffled me since i was 18! i want to know as well, couldn't find it in the interwebs even today. hope someone can shed some light on this.

I never really thought about it until now.

I was always too busy crying like a little girl at that scene.

I always assumed he used an invisible wipe. That's how most shots like that are done. They were used a few times in Citizen Kane as well.

Wow, a year and a half later and I finally get an answer! Only I'm not sure what an "invisible wipe" is. Is it way of splicing two different shots together without seeing the transition?

reply

"The most common uses of the wipe effect is the "Invisible Wipe" where a camera follows a person into another room by tracking parallel to the actor. As the wall passes in front of the camera, the editor has the option of using a wipe to be able to choose any other matching take of the same scene. It is also commonly used in quick camera pans in action sequences, to make a cut invisible. Such wipes can be impossible to see in the finished film" - from Wikipedia

It was a great shot however he did it.
