What happened to Mifune and Kurosowa teamwork?

First of all, I agree with SCIRONROCK's post. WHERES THE DISCUSSION???

This might be abit irrelevant. (just trying to start a thread)
I heard that this was Toshiro Mifune's last film with Akira Kurosowa. Anyone knows what happened. Did they got into each others nerves or something???

Im a newbee Akira fan. Im planning to watch all Akiras films (I know theres alot. So far Ive seen SEVEN SAMURAI, RAN, YUME, RASHOMON, DERSU and RED BEARD.

SEVEN SAMURAI is my fave so far.
RED BEARD is my 2nd (imo its better than the more hyped RAN and RASHOMON)
The rest are all good in their ways. Im sure theres bad Akira films out there but its hard for me to picture. The man is a genius!

...Im surprised that theres almost none threads in here.

There was probably a lot of discussion about this amazing film before, however because it is old, there are fewer recently.

Anyway I am here because I am going to rent this movie again, because I feel that this movie has moved me so much. It has leveled me with great compassion and has taught me a different perspective on what life really is.

I remember when I was new to akira kurosawa, I asked the same questions.

If you want to find out further about his life or relationship with Mifune, I suggest for you to check out IMDB's own biography of the great director.
You can also find info from stephen prince's commentaries, or do a search on the internet regarding the two.

That is how I found out. I dont want to get into detail over it because I think it would be better explained by some other source, but basically they did have a falling out after this movie.
It is said that Red Beard may be his pinnacle picture, containing Mifune at his pinnacle too.

Here is what I remember reading somewhere:

The movie took an unusually long time to film. It was an epic, and the most expensive Japanese movie up to that time.

Mifune was required to grow a beard for the film.

He had the opportunity to make two or three other movies during the year that it took him for this one. Common practice to film more than one movie at a time in Japan at that time.

The schedules fit. He could fit the filming of the other movies into the schedule for this one. The only thing required, that he shave the beard to play those other roles.

He asked Kurosawa if he could finish Redbeard, using a false beard. Kurosawa refused. He felt a false beard would ruin the realism of the film.

Mifune ended up losing three other movies because of this one, and felt that he had basically been enslaved for a year, because Kurosawa wouldn't let him use a false beard.

This is remembered, not recently looked up. (Could be apocryphal). If true, a pity. I would have put up with a false beard for more Kurosawa/Mifune link-ups.

"Ran" with Mifune? Imagine.

Funny how even after he ended his partnership with kurosawa, he still praised him in almost all his interviews.

I heard it was more Kurosawa that ended their partnership, even if he didn't pull the trigger. Aside from forcing Mifune to keep his beard for the film he also supposedly questioned his talents as he felt he gave a poor performance in Red Beard. Personally I liked seeing a very restrained Mifune (compare it to Throne of Blood and you'd hardly believe it was the same guy), but then again I never read the original book.

Red Beard was good but Throne of Blood or The Idiot are better.

Dude/dudette -

You call Rashomon overhyped? Nothing has offended me more in the last 6 and a half years and I never expected that from some one on a Kurosawa film post.

reply

Err... Nothing has offended you more?? You must have had a very peaceful 6 years ^^

(Rashomon is a great film, also for its innovative form, I don't think it "overhyped" personally.)

reply

Nah, to be frankly I regret what I said. Rashomon is NOT overhyped. Its one of his best
