Can somehow who understands Japanese culture please explain why the father could not acknowledge his grandchild until the other daughter was married?

In this film, it is because his elder daughter shamed the family by breaking off her engagement to the young doctor while he was away for three years of medical training, and married someone else. When the young doctor showed he forgave the former finacee/elder daughter by marrying her little sister, the father could once again recognise his older daughter and grandchid.
