Brilliant, absolutely brilliant

I just finished watching the dvd for Red Beard and it just shot right into my top 3 movies ever. Maybe my favorite. This movie has everything. It even has a little action in it. Hard not to have some fighting when you put Mifune together with Kurosawa. Everything about this movie was spot on terrific. I can't pick anything I didn't like about it. You like romance? It's got it. You like a few quaint little giggles? It's got it. You like action? It's got some. You like the triumph of the human spirit? It's got it in spades. You like to be saddened by a movie? Yep, it's got it. By the end of this movie all I could do was smile to myself that I was privilaged enough to sit and be absolutely entertained and overwhelmed by this masterpiece. I have seen probably about 12 Kurosawa films and liked or loved everyone of them but this one so far is the best I've seen. I can't imagine that he made any better. But I hope he surprises me further. Rent this movie immediately!!!

Oh I would like to add too that it also has great drama and thriller scenes. The scene with Yasamoto and the Mantis Lady was a classic thriller scene. And that scene was definitely ripped off by Basic Instinct. Think about it. The more I sit and think about this movie the more I want to definitively say that it is my favorite movie of all time. I might just sign off of here and go watch it again. Magnificent film!!!

Most underrated Kurosawa film probably. So many cinematic moments.

"You're going to cross Sinai?"
"Moses did"

I agree, this movie is absolutely brilliant. Instantly became my favorite Kurosawa movie.

Stupidity isn't a virus...but it sure is spreading like one.

I disagree. I think No Regrets For Our Youth is his most underrated movie. Red Beard seems to get the appreciation it deserves, but No Regrets is comparatively unknown.
