How can people find this boring

There are alot of boring people who think this film is boring.
I didnt know what to expect when i first bought this film on dvd will it was nominated for 5 academy awards and has charlton heston in what more can you want.

reply

I share your sentiment. I can never be bored by a film dealing with important historical events. These people must have the attitude that "history is bunk."

reply

probably younger people. It's unfortunate, but filmmaking hasgone much more to the "quick cut" style direction on most films. There's almost a hyper- reality to films now days.

reply

Well, that's the modern generation for you. It's all about reality crap these days...just look a the t.v. they like....eeeeck! Anything that compels the emotions, speaks of history and greatness is seen as "too gay." For me there was never a truer indication that our civilisation is going the way of ancient Rome...down the gurgler!

i had to watch it with my class for art so i couldnt hear half of what was going on so thats probably what killed it for me but in my note (we had to take notes another thing that killed it) i kept writing Moses instead of michealangelo... me and my friend were laughing so hard because we had no i dea what was happening... suddenly the ceiling id finished..what when did this happe? and now the popes alive ???? so ya we couldnt understand most of it

See my comment above this one..."Love Heals," you are proof-positive of what I said.

i don't think that's really it. i've seen far more ignorant middle-aged (or old) people. where do you think the whopping 49% came from that voted for mccain, even though he chose a lunatic running for vice president, is against abortion, gay marriage, etc.?

it was mostly young people who didn't want to see the usa going down even further on the religious-conservative nutcase road...

yes, there are problems with the young generation but if people started investing in them again, instead of just saying how stupid they are and throwing them out of home as soon as they can, they might just turn out alright.

To Clive-Candy and Deusvolt

This movie sucks!!

Deusvolt said "I can never be bored by a film dealing with important historical events. These people must have the attitude that "history is bunk.""

It is not boring, but the historical events in this film are so horribly mangled that this film is "bunk". The movie is nothing..NOTHING like the section of the book that is based on. Everything was changed. Read the book!!

On the other hand, Lust For Life was brilliantly adapted for the big screen.

I read the book and I must say the movie had more pageantry and spectacle than the book - the Pope deciding on matters of art in the midst of enemy bombardment of his troops, his splendid armor and regalia, the adulation of the crowds, etc. As to the book, I was also a bit appalled by the long treatment of the alleged latent homosexuality of Michelangelo and his inordinate affection for his boy servant. Mercifully, the movie skipped all of that.

Please dont be condescending with generalizations about young people today. I am nineteen years old and absolutely loved this movie. And I agree with you that nearly everything on television today is worthless and irrelevant. But please do not make assumptions about "all young people today" because I am one it is unnecessary.

reply

SusieP2003... Please forgive me. You are not included in my rant but, by your own admission, there's a lot of crap on tv and in the cinemas these days and this is because the populations of the US, Canada, Western Europe and my country, Australia, have been very "dumbed-down' by well-intentioned, but flawed, changes to our education systems. I am very old now and have seen more than one generation pass in front of me. The situation in the world now is truly breathtakingly-shocking and all because people have become very "plastic."

Reading some of the posts it seems some were forced to watch it as a class assignment....and you know what they say about 'paybacks' :)

It is a shame though, the movie's rating is probably much lower than it should be because of it.

I'm a young person (age irrelevant) who has legitimate reasons for disliking this film. We have a film taking place during the Renaissance that has the mood of a 50s Biblical epic.

@marktabolov "the mood of a 50s Biblical epic" ...yes, those biblical movies ("Ben-Hur" 8.2, "Ten Commandments" 7.9, "Quo Vadis" 7.1, "The Robe" 6.7, etc.) are SO disliked and the art of the Renaissance is SO irrelevant. please...

i'm not religious at all and i fully understand and appreciate the importance of these movies in film history and the conflicts behind the art of the Renaissance. "The Agony and the Ecstasy" is a Hollywood movie not the History Channel.

may i suggest... a less judgmental unwarranted condemnation of movies might actually result is a pleasurable viewing experience. that is of course presuming that is what you seek. on the other hand your glass may always be perceived as half empty.

boredom speaks volumes about the true nature of the bored. boredom is the disease of our time.

I don't dislike it for the religious connotations. I felt that the movie was out of its time era. I am a fan of Ben-Hur and Spartacus (which kind of counts) by the way. If it means anything, I also believe Andrei Rublev is a masterpiece.

Agree with the OP. I'm disappointed about the tepid reaction to the film, because I think it's a real corker. Heston and Harrison are in top-notch form, and the film is just beautifully written and shot. I think it's Reed's finest work, even above The Third Man. The fact that it's this grand opulent work visually hides the fact that it's really a very intimate and small story when you think about it, and I think it invites a lot of thought - which is good, obviously, and a very skillful way for the film to convey some of its themes.

ITA with maddocks. Also, so sad that the restoration of the ceiling hadn't happened before the film was made. We didn't realise the true majesty of this great work.

apologies- if my name offends anyone.

reply

It is boring in many parts, because it has tredious action with the painting
and the Pope repetitious questions of when the job will be done.

reply

I realize I'm ten years late from the OP, but just wanted to put in my two cents. I'm 55, so I'm not responding as a kid. But my only problem with this film is the 15 minute long documentary in the beginning. I really don't see the need for it, and it was far too long. I just recorded it off TCM, so I was able to fast forward through it. Other than that, it's a terrific film and one of my favorites.

reply

I find it surprisingly re-watchable. Much moreso than I expected a film of its subject matter to be prior to viewing it.

reply

It was pretty good - 7.5
