The Wild Wild Trivia Challenge

Spun off from another thread, the WWTC not only challenges your wits and skills using IMDb, but is also one of the few places on the planet where all those WWW facts you've accumulated in your head might actually come in handy. It's a wild wild board so there are no real rules. Feel free to toss your own trivia questions into Count Manzeppi's carnival ring.

Let's start with a few questions that combine WWW with Star Trek (for reasons explained elsewhere heh, heh).

I'm a well known WWW actor who became a regular on a short lived WWW ripoff show that starred William Shatner. Who am I?

reply

Richard Kiel...

What WWW tragedies happened on August 17 1966 and 1968?

Yes, Captain Kirk and Voltaire shared the airways on The Barbary Coast. Hard to find but worth a look if you enjoy WWW or ST.

Oops. Two questions in play. It's a wild wild thread I tells ya.

reply

What WWW tragedies happened on August 17 1966 and 1968?

August 17, 1966: Creator/Producer Michael Garrison fractures skull and dies.
August 17, 1968: Ross Martin has a heart attack causing Artemus Gordon to go on special assignment in Washington.

Sorry, wrong answer. Leslie Parrish did appear on both shows, but she was green only on TWWW, not Trek. The actress I'm thinking of was green on Trek, but had normal skin tone on TWWW. Hint: it was normal for black & white.

Alcatraz.

The first Spaniard to document the island was Juan Manuel de Ayala in 1775, who charted San Francisco Bay and named one of the three islands he identified as the "La Isla de los Alcatraces," which translates as "The Island of the Pelicans," from the archaic Spanish alcatraz (in English: "pelican").

Yes, the Presidio, which is a logical destination for a federal agent considering the time, place and circumstances.
I don't recall Presidio being mentioned in the episode at all only Sausalito and Mesquite. I think someone's drink has been heavy laced with belladonna.

- Matt-nicholson-

You have a good memory Matt. The first stage was indeed headed to Mesquite from Sausalito. West, Gordon and a marshal captured it and West continued driving to Mesquite. The second stage (that picked up a headless woman from the boat on the bay), however, was captured by West alone and he redirected the driver at gunpoint to the Presidio. To be clearer I should have specified "the stage bound for Fresno". Apologies.

It's interesting how different fans pick up different things. The Stage & Sports question, for example; I would have sworn the answer was Artemis. It certainly sounded like something he would read. In my mind's eye I could almost see him leafing through it, perhaps disguised as a patrician at some swanky club. Imagine my surprise when the peruser was a hay-seed hick character who could barely read. Who'd a thunk it? Now, if the clue had been "the episode where Mr. Spock's father, Sarek of Vulcan, shows up," then Alpha and I would have guessed it in seconds. Next....

Vasquez Rocks.

The fort set (Cestus III), retouched here with science-fiction trappings and location signs, can be seen in several early episodes of The Wild Wild West, most prominently in the episode "The Night of the Sudden Plague." It also is an important part of the coincidentally-titled Mission: Impossible episode, "Trek." This set was directly adjacent to Vasquez Rocks – so close that in an episode of Bat Masterson, entitled "Dagger Dance" (1961, with Byron Morrow) both the fort and the distinctive peaks of Vasquez Rocks appear in the same shot. In some shots Vasquez Rocks can be seen from the set in "Arena" itself. The fort set plays a major role in the 1964 Bonanza episode "Alias Joe Cartwright." The fort's walls and crenelations are clearly visible throughout the episode. The Vasquez Rocks area is used for the traveling segments back and forth to town. According to Eddie Paskey's website, it was also used for the film Beau Geste. [3] According to Jerry L. Schneider's "Vasquez Rocks" web page on Movie Making Locations, the fort was built in the mid 1950s for the television show Tales of the 77th Bengal Lancers from Screen Gems, a Columbia Pictures subsidiary, erected at a cost of US$117,843.17. The set was torn down several years after the filming of "Arena", and the area is a parking lot across from the Vasquez Rocks Natural Area.

There were ten Lovelesses and you aren't in all of them.
That's right.

And you're not in all of them because...
Because Michael married this woman I told you about. She wanted to play Antoinette, and she started working on him. And so he had me replaced, which is something I never thought he would do. It broke my heart. I heard that she couldn't act, so they replaced her immediately. Then they used different [female sidekicks for Loveless], but nobody who could ever sing with him and nobody who could ever really work with him the way I did.

TNOT Watery Death.

Ding! Ding! Correct!

One of D.C. Fontana's yarns. If Westworld had a WWW section I'd probably hang out in the Mermaid Bar.
TNOT Undead?

WINNER!! WINNER!! WINNER!!

TNOT Undead weighs in with no less than 7 fight scenes although, depending on how you score these things, you could argue for as few as 6 or as many as 10. Here are the 7 "official" brawls...

1: West fights zombified man at voodoo ceremony.
2: West fights thugs at boat dock.
3: West fights guards in cave.
4: West fights guard with whip at underground lake.
5: West fights guards in laboratory.
6: West and Gordon fight guards outside their holding cell.
7: West and Gordon fight guards on plantation house staircase.

Note that fights 4 and 5 could be considered the same brawl. West defeats guard with whip and swings with whip (pre Indiana Jones) to crash through window and fight guards in lab. Since, however, it's different opponents in different locations (sets), it counts as 2. It's also interesting to note that there are no fights at all in Act 1. So there is 1 fight in the teaser and 2 fights each in Acts 2, 3 and 4.

There are also 3 additional acts of violence which, again, depending how you score things, could raise the total to 10...

8: West knocks out voodoo ceremony attendee with a blow from behind.
9: West tricks guard at cave entrance and knocks him out with a kick to the face.
10: Main villain grabs West's throat trying to strangle him. West grabs back but villain is quickly shot by jilted phrenology woman and falls into underground lake.

Winner! Winner! Winner!

Conrad received permission to attend the 1966 Derby and the various events leading up to it. So a special script was written with Gordon as the lead character and Conrad able to shoot his scenes in only two days. It seems odd that WWW was already shooting episodes for season 2 in early May (today's hour long shows typically start in early August) but there are several sources that confirm the story. Of course, a season had more episodes back then and they were switching to color so maybe that explains it.

Didn't Artie wear a cast in the fourth season episode The Night of the Juggernaut (1968)?

reply

Yes, he got hurt during "Actuary," and limped/had a crutch, etc... as part of his getup during "Kraken," "Jugg,"and "Sedgwick."

Winner! Winner! Winner!

Close enough anyways. TNOT Juggernaut, Act 1, Scene 1. Gordon (wearing a cast from a collapsing building in the teaser) is helped to his seat by two nurses. West introduces him to the rather bland and forgettable Tom Harwood out of the Albuquerque office (Peter Hale in one of his five WWW appearances).

Yes, he got hurt during "Actuary," and limped/had a crutch, etc... as part of his getup during "Kraken," "Jugg,"and "Sedgwick."

Note that Martin sits (or, at most, stands in place) for the entire episode.

Both Simon Scott characters tried to force the rightful owners off their oil-rich land. The other episode is The Night of the Golden Cobra (1966).

Ding! Ding! Correct!

A bit of a curveball since Scott also played a 1st season good guy. Note: Golden Cobra was another script modified to allow an actor (the by this time always in pain Boris Karloff) to sit for most of the episode.

It was actually the last line in the episode as West sets fire to a handful of the illegal money and uses it to light up some cigars. Since it was also Aidman's last WWW appearance, those are Pike's final words (along with a freeze frame).
