What Happened to Dr. Smith?

As we all know, Dr. Zachary Smith started out as a competent person working for the space program, presumably a medical doctor since he gave the Robinsons a checkup before they boarded the Jupiter 2.

And Smith was also hired by an unnamed sinister foreign power to sabotage the flight of the Jupiter 2. and thus kill the Robinsons and Major West. And Smith did a competent job of sabotage, at least up until he got trapped aboard the Jupiter 2 and was launched into space with the Robinsons.

During the first five or so episodes of Lost In Space Smith occassionally tried to kill one or more of the Robinsons, even after they crashed on some unknown planet and had very little chance of ever reaching their goal Alpha Centauri. Presumably even if they did ever reach Alpha Centauri it should be long after the unnamed sinister foreign power sent expeditions which reached Alpha Centauri.

But Smith changed after the first few episodes. Instead of remaining evil and competent, Smith became much less of each. Instead of trying to kill the Robinsons, Smith generally considered himself a member of the party and helped a litle, even though he was selfish, greedy, and lazy and often caused various problems for them. And Smith was much less competent.

So what caused the big change, in universe?

And my guess is post-traumatic stress disorder PTSD. Smith was not chosen to go on the flight and thus he was not chosen for his pyschological abilites to hand the stress of the dangers of space. So maybe the Robinsons and West enduring even more terrifying dangers in the first few episodes without being traumatized by them, but Smith couldn't take the dangers he faced.

Or perhaps some event early in the series happened off screen and was never seen in any episode that terrifed Smith and reduced him to a nervious wreck who couldn't stand danger and realized he needed the Robinsons to survive.

Since the new Smith would do anything to avoid danger and confontation, he no longer threatened the Robinsons and did his best to cooperate and placate them, but was no longer competent enough to avoid causing trouble and facing more stress.

And possibly Smith suffered some damage to his memory in that hypothetical off screen incident, and so was no longer able to remember what actions were mistakes, and so kept repeating those mistakes over and over again.

First the show wasn't planned out very far in advance. The character of Dr.Smith (he was a USAF Col and a Ph.D) probably wasn't expected to make it to season 2, if there was one.

The writers had a tough time coming up with 24 scripts a year with a science quality to them. The actual space program at that time was only about ten years old (manned space flight less than that).

Harris/Smith was useful to them. So was Mumy. They could write for them but the show had to change or it wasn't going to survive. Mumy,Harris had to be the focus.

What shocked me is the episode where that country guy landed on the planet, When they went to investigate Don actually handed Smith a weapon & I thought “WHOA! Didn’t see that coming! In God’s name WHY?!” Then a few episodes later on he mentions something about “No way I’m ever handing YOU a gun Smith”. But he DID! THEN of course you have the episode which I just saw btw where Smith was alone with the girls & had all of the guns & dismantled most of them because genius that he was he wanted to “clean” them & thought he could put them back together easily. So again he had access to ALL of them. With none of the men there. Mind numbing! Someone explain that to me.

Even more incomprehensible, in one episode Dr. Smith gave what was supposedly all the guns except large weapons to the aliens and they never got them back, but are later shown using smaller weapons. Possibly at times Smith even has one. This seems to indicate that they either had a hidden stash of other weapons or parts from which they could assemble new weapons.

It's actually natural that Smith would start to consider himself a part of the Robinson team rather than their enemy, because nothing brings people closer together than a common enemy or common dangers. Smith was stuck out there with the rest of them, and presumably couldn't pilot the ship himself, so until he learned to fly the damn spaceship the Robinsons and Major West were his only hope of getting home... so of course he stopped trying to kill them!

As to why he became such an idiot, well, the show's writers were idiots.

Let me answer that. Uhhhh…..NO! In a word “BULLSHIT!” “ Because nothing brings people closer together than a common enemy or common dangers.” What common enemy or dangers? Smith HAS NO or does not CARE about common enemies or dangers, only those that are dangers or enemies to himself. He’s the definition of selfishness capitalized. if a danger to the Robinson & Don were also a danger to him, that didn’t put him on no ones side Otter, you got your tea leaves crossed there bud.

As for what I was saying, Smith held a gun to Don & not only threatened to kill him as well as leave the rest of the Robinsons marooned on the planet. That’s called “showing your hand”. There was, is, could never be no doubt about who he was & what he was about from then on. They would have HAD to deduce that he indeed was the enemy who was the reason they were lost in space & was the one responsible for sabotaging the ship. From there it’s no leap to figure out he’s not exactly who he says he is that he could be an enemy agent from a foreign power. Don had to fight the guy for his life, what was he going to say? It was all a mistake? That he was upset? Sure. Your take on it is too simplistic Otter.

All he had to do was tell John what happened & if the show followed any semblance of common sense you forcibly remove the guy & kick him out at gunpoint. There is no “It’s only natural Smith would start to consider himself as part of the Robinson team”. As of then it would’ve been GAME OVER! You’re out! There ARE NO take backs from then on there but I”m sure you have must have a explanation of course as to why there would be. I’m not buying it & I’m sure many others who read this are not buying it either.

I think the producers had second thoughts about having an "evil doctor" in a show watched by lots of children. So they just changed the character.

The show was never consistent. They incorporated the unaired pilot into the first four episodes, which didn't even have Dr Smith!
