Robert Wolders-Eric Hunter. WHAT???

OK, a Dutchman in the Texas Rangers, I can see that. But a Texas Ranger who wears matching paisley sport coats and hats? And he looks so lousy when shooting a six-shooter. I know he was sleeping with Merle Oberon, but did she own stock in the show or something?

I couldn't agree more- IMHO Wolders killed this show with that kind of crap.

Yeah,I realize that the Eric Hunter character was over-the-top with his numerous & colorful western duds. But I also have to say that I did get a kick out of him when he was added to the cast during the second season of Laredo.Robert Wolders was originally brought on board in order to ease some of the pressures off of Neville Brand.Neville, who was terrific in the role of Ranger Reese Bennett & a favorite of mine, was finding it difficult working on the punishing schedule of a weekly TV series. Sadly,Neville also had a drinking problem that was causing problems on the set that resulted in cost overruns. So you cannot blame the producers of Laredo for bringing in a new cast member to try & solve these challenges.America,& the wild west, was a nation of immigrants.Having Wolders character be Dutch(which he was in real life) was not at all unbelievable given the history of the US.I always felt that Eric was from a wealthy family in Europe, educated, quite intelligent, worldly, with elegant manners & a taste for fine things. To me that explained his taste in clothes & the outfits he wore.I enjoyed the rivalry between he & Chad over romancing the gals.Eric & Reese were hilarious together because they were polar opposites.I understand why some fans of Laredo never warmed up to the Eric character, but somehow, someway he fit into the series just fine for me.He was refreshing in that we had never seen a cowboy like Eric before on any other TV western or sense.

To me, he just never really fit in with the rest of the group. You had Captain Parmalee (the brains), Reese (comedy relief), Chad (ladies man), and Joe (muscle). He just really wasn't needed.

I found his competition with Chad regarding the ladies always fun to view.
Erik also brought in a continental charm & sophistication that none of the other rangers possessed. That contrast between Erik & the others made him unique.
