type of gun

Anybody know what type of guns the main characters used? thanks

reply

In the televised episodes, mostly, Alexander Scott and Kelly Robinson used M1911A Colt .45 automatic handguns.
In a couple of episodes I think 9mm Berrettas were used. I remember one in particular, "This Guy Smith," where the character of Robison shoves a small automatic in his back pocket. I think that was a Berretta. No way you could do that with a .45.
However, in many PR shots released to hype I Spy, before the show aired, Culp and Cosby can be seen posing with Walther P-38s.

The weapons I remember seeing most often were a Browning Hi-Power 9mm and a
Walther P-38 9mm.

reply

You are correct.

Kelly Robinson used a Walther P-38K and Alexander Scott used a Smith & Wesson Model 29 9mm Auto.

reply

The model 29 is a 44mag revolver. The model 39 is SW's first 9mm auto and the M59 is a double stack version of the 39. I'm just picky.

reply

The Colt 45 you speak of would be sorta funny due to its size. I can't remember the series well since it was on when I was in grammar school, but if they used a .45 .... I guess it was because that type of gun was standard military issue back then & unlike today, the military was considered well trained and well armed. But for just a couple of guys running around as spies, a .45 would have been overkill, I think.

Kelly used a modified Walther P-38. The barrel was shortened to 3" and rge front sight re-installed. Scott used a Colt Commander, most likely in 9mm like the Walther. It would greatly simplify things if they had interchangeable ammunition.

This program shaped my life. As I recall the gun mostly used was described in the paperbacks that were written based on the show. Remember these guys worked for some US Army spy organization. The gun: a Spanish Star .45. It was almost identical to the old 1911A1 but a little smaller in the frame.

reply

Culp: Walther P38K (9mm); Cosby: Colt Commander (1911A1 pattern, shortened barrel and slide, aluminum frame, probably .45). Culp was a shooting enthusiast and I remember reading, while the series was new, how he took Cosby to a gun store to pick out a weapon. Yeah, I'm that old.

reply

Me too. Yeah, I remember the P38K(Man for UNCLE gun) and the Commander. Culp always had interesting guns his movies/TV shows. Watch Trackdown/Hannie Caulder and Greatest American Hero. He always had interesting firearms.

reply

So, there's no consensus about what type of guns they used.

reply

I don't think there was a consistent continuity in the weapons, especially for Cosby. I seem to recall he often had what looked like military issue .45, but I also remember episodes in which he was carrying a short (3-inch?) barrel revolver.

Culp's weapon seemed to be most often a 9mm, but I seem to recall him using a military style .45 occasionally too.

If you ever want to know about any type of firearm used in any move or tv show:

I have noticed them using:

Walthers
1911's
Browning Hi-Powers
and good 'ol snub-nose .38's.

Not in any particular order, other than, more or less, what countries (season) they are in at any given time.
