About Kinchloe's / Ivan Dixon's mustache

There's an episode where Kinch is forced to impersonate a visiting African prince who just so happens to look exactly like Kinch, except for the mustache, as the Prince is clean shaven. So Kinchloe has to shave it off. Then later at the end of the story, Kinch is back with the Heroes and he magically has his mustache back. So my question is, does anybody know if Ivan Dixon wore a fake mustache during the entire run of the show?

I recallDixon sported a 'stache in a couple of movies,one his Emmy nom. role as a soldier in Vietnam. In any case, would have been annoying to don a fake brush everyday on the set for 5 years or so

More likely he wore a false one for a couple of weeks til his grew back in. The same thing was done on a few Barney Miller episodes when the always-mustachio'd Harris had to go clean for a drag assignment, then wore a falsie to hide his shame. Of course, Barney M. being what it was, the writers couldn't resist throwing in a couple of jokes about the fake.

I would agree with you all except for a couple of points:

1) Dixon's appearance was the same at all times. Had she shaved it off, then it would have been some time before it was back to normal. They had no "growing in period" while it slowly grew back, especially at the end of that particular episode where it was completely grown in.

2) I agree it would be a bit ornery to wear a fake mustache all the time on camera. But think about how a lot of actors wear toupees over their bald heads all of the time, so I reckon a guy could wear a fake mustache. All in all it seems to fit to me.

I wonder where that Ouija board is - it'll have the answer...

TV series are not 100% filmed week-by-week, one script at a time. once lit, they might knock-off several episodes worth of each interior setup in order to save time/$$$.

they probably filmed all the "with mustache" scenes for this episode -- and for a few following general appearances -- then he shaved.

no doubt dixon had a few weeks off to re-grow it!

Dixon wore a stache in his non-Hogan's Heroes roles, so it was probably the McCoy.

Maybe they did that episode as the last of the season and it grew back over the break.

I think it's odd that people seemed to go out of their way to avoid saying he wore a fake mustache. It's the only reasonable answer.

agreed -- in that episode it was purely "above the lip" -- otherwise it often ran down the sides of his mouth where a beard might start growing.

no matter; the script called for it and he did it -- one of my favorite episodes.

Well that episode was one of the last of the season so maybe they filmed the scenes without the mustache at the very end.
