Coming to Adult Swim.

Everyone

This show is coming to Cartoon Network's Adult Swim Block, at 5:30 a.m., starting on October 31st, (Or November 1st, whichever way you look at it.)

Yes, this show, not the remake that just came out (Under the Japanese title, Tetsujin 28).

Discussion starts now.

If a machine, a Terminator, can learn the value of human life...maybe we can too.

I've taped a few episodes to watch later in the day. Very goofy. They flew into the Australian outback to be attacked by "natives" that were more like the stereo-type of American Indians.
But my first exposure to the theme song came from the MST3K episode, "Girls' Town" as Mike and the bots sang "Gigantor" when Mamie VanDoren walked up the stairs in a very tight skirt.

I just caught it on this past sunday morning at 5:30 am. It was the first time I had seen it in close to 40 years. Boy, would I like to see the cartoon network start running 8TH MAN.

Hardly. In fact, almost every episode begins w/ a reference that the show is set in the year 2000 ! Gigantor is a relic from the very beginning of the Japanese animation industry. Agreed, it's seriously cheezy. I still like it bec of the nostalgia angle. But, they've (ie. the Japanese) come a very long way in the intervening forty years....Jet

I was just saying the same thing ! 8th Man was another after-school favorite. When this originally aired, I was in the 1st grade, so it's great to see this after so much time.

One other thing occurs to me. In the early 60s, everything originating from Japanese was crap. In spite of my fondness for the show, Gigantor was no exception. Forty years later, that which originates from Japan is synonymous with excellence....Jet

During the 90's they showed the new version of 8 Man (8 Man After). Gigantor's new to me but I watch it when up ridiculously late.

This may be the MOST ridiculous (ly awesome) show I have ever seen.

(next to this show I found on Digital Cable called "Caddilacs and Dinosaurs.")

Got to be good looking cause he's so hard to see

Eh if I'd grown up in the 60's I might've liked this show. But I was born in the 80's and I got into anime with Fullmetal Alchemist, Inuyasha, Cowboy Bebop, FLCL and such.

I will admit it does have some old-school appeal. And that theme song is so darn addictive. Wish I could find it to download. :)

i dont like this show its 2 old for my taste 2 bad for u who like it b/c in march [adult swim] is changin the line up

reply

It's a pretty goofy show, yeah. I can give it a break though since it was made in the '60s and all.

Stuff like this reminds me of "Movie Poop Shoot.com" from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

The theme song makes me cringe, but I can't help but whistle it when out and about.
--As for a show beling bad because its too old-I find DEEP GAPPING(GAPE-ING?well, anyway) HOLES in your logic. Spock to McCoy in 'Star Trek's classic and hilarious 'I, Mudd' episode. 'Gigantor's theme is catchy(kitchi) like the theme from the old Gamera movie series. The kids singing made me wanna hide, but the actual over-all melody was heroic and toe-tap worthy.
--'Tetsujin-28'('Ironman-28' is the original title of the show. 'Gigantor' is the Americanized name...) was the first show. Later, a new-adventures type show was created called 'Tetsujin-28: Go!'. In the 90's came 'Tetsujin-28: FX'(I think thats the name...).
--I'll be 42 by April and was THERE when 'Gigantor' first came to Americam tv, along with 'Astro-Boy', 'Marine Boy', 'Kimba, the White Lion'(may NOT be original American title & the other Japanese Titles escape me) and the ultra-cool 'Speed Racer'! 'Speed Racer', by the way, was called 'Go, Mifuni!'.
--About a year or 2 ago I ALSO saw it for the first time in nearly 40 yrs when Cartoon Network did a 'Giant Robots' weak featuring ONE severely edited episode which they would sprinkle over a few minutes day during viewings of other 'mecha' shows. This realy SUCKED(!) but I managed to tape it. Tho' I have since then desided to wait until a DVD copy comes cheaply my way. So to compound on what Jetman said, I had to laugh outloud when the narrorator casually stated at the episodes beginning, "One day in the year 2000..."(LOL!)
--By the way, fell free to read my single chapter story called 'The Lone Ranger Vs Dracula.' at fanfiction.net . My name there is Velocity9. Also check what happens when the galaxy's MOST varacious hunters set the sights on the living Son of Earth's MOST dangerous game in 'Godzilla Vs Predators:Alien Damnation!'. Thats right AARRnold's Predators! I promise, no mega growth Preds!
--I mention the above because a Gigantor story comes to mind involving one of Godzilla's most formidable foes...Hmmmmm

Anybody notice how some of the mustaches look darker than the rest? Someone must be sportin' the Hitler 'stach.

"Forty years later, that which originates from Japan is synonymous with excellence."

If you say so, I find most modern anime to be mass produced and generic both in plot and in animation style, at least as far as anime made for TV goes. The movies and OVA series fair a lot better.
