Gigantor

I loved this show when I was a kid - couldn't get enough

Anyone else out ther have fond memories of Gigantor - "His power in your hands"

reply

I remember it vaguely. I only remember seeing one episode about ten years ago where some girl was playing tennis :@. But what i do remember is the theme tune. That was hilarious.

reply

Wow, what a bizarre thread to stumble across!!!!

"Gigantor...Gigantorrr.Gigaaaa-aaaaaantorr!
Gigantor the space-age robot
His power is - in your hands!
Bigger than Big!
Stronger than Strong!
Taller than Tall!"

That's as many lyric fragments as I can come up with. I very vaguely remember the cartoon. In my mind I pair it with "Astroboy," which must have been about the same time. "Astroboy" is the earliest Japanese cartoon I can think of - earlier even than "Speed Racer" - and for some reason I think Gigantor was Japanese also, though I could be wrong there. (Hell, I was born in December 1961 - I was three when it came out!)

My oldest sister is a music writer. In the early 80's she saw a New Wave band in L.A. that played the "Gigantor" theme as part of its standard set. (She also saw Bill Mumy of "Lost in Space" in a band out there at that time. But I don't know if it was the band that played "Gigantor.") What a trip that would have been!

I've never seen a band play "Gigantor" but in 1989 I did see Bruce Cockburn perform "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" from Python's "Life of Brian."

It should should be.

"Gigantor...Gigantorrr.Gigaaaa-aaaaaantorr!
Gigantor the space-age robot
HE'S AT YOUR COMMAND
GIGANTOR THE SPACE-AGE ROBOT
His power is - in your hands!
Bigger than Big!
Stronger than Strong!
Taller than Tall!
READY TO FIGHT FOR RIGHT
AGAINST WRONG."

reply

You left out, "Quicker than Quick..." after "Stronger than Strong...". Just thought you'd like to know.
--I'd bet it would sound less goofy if 'they' had dropped the congo-beat for a more military beat and had 12 marines sing it. Also, the marines would forcefully SPEAK the "Bigger tha Big...etc". lines, then go back to singing the rest. Aslo the 'sway'(for lack of a better term) in beginning and end("Gi-GAN-tor" and so forth should be down played to avoid sounding silly. Just thinking.

I come from Aus yet remember Gigantor well. Tere were others prior that I still believe were better Astroboy, marine boy and prince planet to name a few. I was borne in 1958 and remember fondly a cartoon called Tobor, or at least I think that was the title. I do remember the theam song though which was

"Theres a prehistoric monstor. That came from outer space. Created by the marsions to destroy the human race. The FBI is helpless, its 40 stories tall, what can we do who can we call. Call Tobor the eight man, quick call Tobor the mightesest robot of a man."

Well that it from me.

If anyone knows where I can here the Tobor the 8th Man theme, please tell me. It sounds great.

reply

Never mind. I just found it at Sound America. Going to listen to it in a little bit.

reply

The 8th man theme sucks. One of these days I'm going to completely remix it into how I thought it would sound.

reply

Wow, I'd completely forgot about that cartoon "Tobor the 8th Man" until you brought it up. My brother and I used to watch it when we were young. I loved that cartoon.

reply

i remember the show being played on sci-fi and I did enjoy it as a kid, however I don't know how entertaining it would be for me now that im older.

Speakin of the theme song...those men creeped me out when they said Giagannttoorrr...*shudders* I dont even wanna think about it now! ><

reply

as a kid it was the best thing on..followed closely by jonny quest and the thunderbirds. And at the middle age of 45 i would still buy a dvd of gigntor of it was out there.

reply

i remember watchin it as a kid in puerto rico, what i remember is that the opening credits were accompnied by a military march and not by the song. anyone remember this detail?

reply

yeah - the march was from "Tetsujin ni-jûhachi-gô" (Japanese for "Iron Man #28"), the series that this series is based upon. You can download the original credits at http://www.toonamiarsenal.com/download/other.php . (It's in Japanese, and it contains the sponsor chants: "Guriko! Guriko! GU-RI-KO!!" (Guriko is the Japanese titling for the Glico Candy Company, who sponsored the series))

reply

I have said elsewhere in this site that I, too saw it when it FIRST came to American tv when I was a lil' kid. To my recolection, the Military them you refer to has never been played. But on the other hand, the song might have been BETTER if HAD been a military beat and had less 'sway' at the beginning and end. As another person said in this site, It sounds vaguely creepy. I also wanna hide.

reply

I have the entire set on DVD (two volumes) that Rhino put out in 2002-2003. I think you can still find it.

I think the verses of Japanese Gigantor theme went like this:

Biru no tani ni gao ( In the valley of the buildings "Gao")
Yoru no highway ni gao (In the night highway "Gao")
Dadadadadadan to tama ga kuru (Dadadadadadan the bullets come)
Babababababan to hane kaesu (Babababababan they get repelled)
Byuun to tondeku tetsujin nijyu hachi go (Tetsujin nijyuhachi go flys away with sound "Byuun")

Te o tsunage seigi no mikata ( Join hands who sides with justice )
Tataki tsubuse akuma no tesaki ( Smash the devil's henchmen )
Ii mo warui mo rimocon shidai ( Good or bad depend's on remote control )
Tetsujin Tetsujin do ko e yuku ( Tetsujin Tetsujin where do you go ? )
Byuun to tondeku tetsujin nijyu hachi go (same as above)

It had no resemblence to the American theme of "Gigantor".

reply

Close enough. The lyrics are:

BIRU no machi ni GAÔ yoru no HAIUEI (HIGHWAY) ni GAÔ
DADADADADÂN to dangan ga kuru BABABABABÂN to haretsusuru
BYÛN to tondeku tetsujin nijûhachi-gô
Aru toki wa seigi no mikata
Aru toki wa akuma no tesaki
Î mo warui mo RIMOKON (REMOTE CONTROL) shidai
Tetsujin tetsujin doko e yuku
BYÛN to tondeku tetsujin nijûhachi-gô

Biru no machi ni gaô yoru no HAIUEI (HIGHWAY) ni gaô
DADADADADÂN to dangan ga kuru BABABABABÂN to haretsusuru
BYÛN to tondeku tetsujin nijûhachi-gô
Te wo nigire seigi no mikata
Tataki tsubuse akuma no tesaki
Teki ni watasu na daijina RIMOKON (REMOTE CONTROL)
Tetsujin tetsujin hayaku yuke
BYÛN to tondeku tetsujin nijûhachi-gô

Also, Keep in mind that "Tetsujin nijûhachi-gô" translates to "Iron man #28".

reply

I finally made a translation! It goes:

Waiting in the buildings with "Gaow"
In the highways at night with "Gaow"
"DADADADADAAN!" and the bullets come!
"BABABABABAAN!" and stops them!
"BYUUN" and it flies - Iron Man #28!
Sometimes a friend of justice, sometimes the daemon's henchmen
Good or bad depends on your remote control
Iron Man, Iron Man, where are you going?
"BYUUN" and it flies - Iron Man #28!

Waiting in the buildings with "Gaow"
In the highways at night with "Gaow"
"DADADADADAAN!" and the bullets come!
"BABABABABAAN!" and it stops them!
"BYUUN" and it flies - Iron Man #28!
Shake the hand of the friend of justice, destroy the daemon's henchmen!
Your important remote control must never be given to the enemy
Iron Man, Iron Man, hurry up and go!
"BYUUN" and it flies - Iron Man #28!
