I Can't Believe

That Sally Field played Gidget and then turned around and played Sybil. She so over acted as Gidget ( I know the writers wrote her like that) and phony and cutesy then was able to be so believable as a multi personality woman. It was the sort of first role that could typecast for life but they let her audition for Sybil and was truly marvelous.

After Gidget and the even cutesier, and more ridiculous, The Flying Nun, Sally Field ran screaming for a role like the title character in Sybil, just to escape the overperked perkiness typecasting.

I'm not crying, you fool, I'm laughing!

Hewwo.

I think Sally Field practically invented, "the perky teenager" as Gidget. She was never shrill or strident as Gidget. Just sweet and guileless. It's actually refreshing compared to the characters that came after.
