Sally Field playing a 15 year old at age 19

I can't believe how young and petite she looks. But having said that, she looks amazing in her '60s too!

Anne Hathaway did the same exact thing when she stared in Princess Diaries, but I think Sally Field pulls off the age difference much better. She really looks like a 15 year-old.

19 and 15 are not really too much of an age difference. Many actors play younger or older roles. In fact in a high school picture at 18, Sally looked much younger.

I agree she looks great today. Gidget is still one of my all-time favorites. I can help to think what a second and third season of Gidget would have been liked if the old dinosaur executives would have given it a chance.

All that aside, I think this show is cute...
But I don't have a problem believing there was only one season. There really wasn't too many ways to go with this show, plot-wise.

In many of the teen movies from the 70s and 80s, some of the actors were in their 20s. I don't mind it as long as the movie is good. Sally was perfect for the Gidget part. I was searching for other Gidget remakes and there was two made for TV movies. It would have been great to see Sally do a reunion of Gidget in the 70s rather than some of her replacements.

The only teen high school movie where they really stretched the age was "Grease". Olivia was 28 I believe when she did that and JOhn about 5 yrs younger. Stockard Channing was the oldest around 31 I think. The only one close enough in age was Dinah Manoff who played Marti. SHe was 19 at the time. Nevertheless I didnt really notice or pay attention to the fact most were older. It was a fun movie and they made it believable to me.

Yeah I would love to have seen an older grown up Sally come back to play Gidget to see how she turned out. That would have been fun. I love this show. I was watching the pilot again and I loved how there was a combination with the comedy some dramatic moments such as when she thinks her dad has read her diary and she gets all upset crying. THen he comes in because he feels bad about it as does she. Her crying was so believable that it really pulled at my heartstrings.

I'm 23 and I think I could easily pass as a 16-17 year old.

WRONG!!! in Grease Olivia was the oldest at age 30, where as John was 23 at the time. she has spoken about it on chat shows for years how old she felt around the others

reply

Sorry, but you are the one who is wrong. Stockard Channing was the oldest, having been born in 1944. ONJ was born in 1948.

Toy-Cannon confirmed it. I'm a huge Olivia fan and of Grease. Olivia was 29 when the movie came out and turned 30 three months afterwards. She was 28 when they started filming. John was 23 yes when they started filming and turned 24 when it came out. But Stockard was always the oldest. She was 34 when the movie came out and 33 when filming started.

Look at Ralph Macchio. He starred in his first Karate Kid in 1984 around the age of 23 or 24. He looked about 12 then. he still looks young, as does Sally Field. Some people are just blessed.

Fasten your seatbelts.... It's going to be a bumpy night!

It's easier and cheaper for them to hire adults to play teens under 18 because they don't have the same labor laws nor do they have to tutor them for school. That's why you will often find adults playing under 18 roles when they look younger- YES look at Ralph Macchio in karate kid- he totally looked like a young teen and was in his 20's!

reply

THis was one of the best father/daughter shows. I think it only failed because of comparisons (at the time) to the original movie.

reply

I totally agree with the Ralph Macchio comparison, he's in his early 50's now and still looks like he's in his 30's, heck i'm 38 and everyone i know says i look like i'm in my early to mid 20's, lol yeah i guess some people are just blessed with that.
