Did Gidget Crack ABC's 'Color Barrier'?

Does anyone know if "Gidget" was indeed ABC's first series to air in color? Most of the other shows before that were in black-and-white, I have no recollection of any of them switching to color before "Gidget" aired. Also, anyone know what did happen to either Betty Conner or Lynette Winter? I only remember seeing Lynette as a guest on "Family Affair", and according to her credits, she only made a few more appearances on "Petticoat Junction" - after that, nothing more.

Oh - THAT color barrier

I thought you meant that the show allowed black characters on it - then I thought, "wait a minute - I never saw any on there...OMG - the 60's version of FRIENDS!!!"

I believe the first color series aired on ABC were cartoons -- The Flintstones, The Jetsons, and Beany and Cecil, in 1962.

There was also an episode with Japanese kids, speaking Japanese.

As a previous poster pointed out, "The Flintstones" and "The Jetsons" were both airing in color in 1962 ("Flintstones" started in 1960 and was always produced in color, but aired in black-and-white for its first two seasons). Also, both "Ozzie & Harriet" and "The Farmer's Daughter" were airing in color on ABC in 1965.

I don't know what happend to Betty Connor but I read somewhere online about a year ago that Lynette Winter was a school teacher. I'm not sure if I read it on this message board or where but someone made the comment that she was their school teacher and they were so shocked when they saw her on Gidget and must have mentioned it to her. I will have to see if i can find that again.

Th Big Valley, also carried by ABC was in color its first season.

"The FBI," which also premiered in 1965, was broadcast in color on ABC.

While I know you were referring to b&w vs. color- I wanted to note that Gidget did have some minor roles portrayed by black actors. I'm thinking of two policemen, and one cook in particular. Okay not exactly powerful roles but speaking parts that could have gone to an up and coming white actor.

Didn't they have an episode where Gidget, her sister and brother in law all went to Sanford and Son's junkyard to look for a birthday present for her father? If I remember correctly, they bought a bottle of Fred's ripple wine, got drunk and had too much of hangover to celebrate the professor's birthday. Or maybe I was just hallucinating.
