Any characters that you did NOT like?

I'm just watching the 2nd season on DVD for the fifth time and on the episodes called "A Man Called Smart parts 2 and 3" there is another chief of control. The 91 year old Admiral Harold Hargrade is introduced as a replacement chief, even though Edward Platt was in the episodes. I know that he appears on other episodes later as well. I don't understand why he was brought into the show. I found him extremely annoying with him trying to fall down every 2 minutes. He was not funny at all and didn't bring anything to the show.

Also the episodes with Harry Hoo, the Hawaiian detective. That's another character I disliked. They should have had a normal Hawaiian play that part, instead of a white guy with rubber eyelids and cat whiskers.

"A-mazing..."

They certainly did keeep pounding the "he's old" joke on the Admiral over and over again.

99's mother.
just too like real mothers in law.

The three-part "Man Called Smart" episode was actually a movie made for theaters, but while they were producing it, the movie "Munster Go Home" bombed at the Box Office. Worried that the same thing might happen, they instead added it to that season's episode roster in three installments.

I thought Harry Hoo was about the funniest character ever. I loved the way he would hear one of Max's crazy ideas, and just shake his head and say, "Amazing."

His "two possibilities" was also great. His interactions with Max and 99 in the two episodes were among the best in the entire series.

The guy who played Harry Hoo was a close friend of Don Adams'. Yeah, it was racist but he was a funny character. (Also, remember The Claw? "Not The Craw! The Craw!")

The Admiral was funny the first time only.

I never really liked Larrabee. The guy who played him was Adams' cousin. (Notice a pattern here?) It didn't make sense to have a guy dumber than Max and also he just wasn't a good actor.

George Carlin: It's all bullsh-t and it's bad for ya.

Robert Karvelas was a good enough actor to play Larabee. And it was funny having someone dumber than Max.
In one episode the Chief threatens to fire Max.
Max: You can't fire me.
Chief: Why not?
Max: Because if I'm no longer at Control, Larabee moves up.
End of threat.

reply

...Well, I guess we disagree. The premise was that he was the dumbest spy in the world. If there's someone dumber, then what's the point the show? It's like having someone wackier than Lucy, or louder than Ralph Kramden, or cooler than The Fonz.

reply

You're right, but Larabee was a minor character.

reply

Yeah, but Max could be incredibly dumb then do something very brave and clever, whether he knew what he was doing or not.

I actually loved the Admiral and thought he was particularly funny during the pre wedding episode when they had to hide him around Max's apartment.

If there was one character I did not care for it was Max's old army buddy, played by Don Rickles. Just was never a Rickles fan.

reply

He didn't bother me. They made it a two-parter for the sake of the actors, but it definitely felt padded. Nothing much happens.

reply

Loved the admiral can't think of someone I didn't like.

reply

Absolutely loved Harry Hoo

I think they were deliberately spoofing the fact that all the big screen Charlie Chans up to that point had been played by caucasians.
