Can 'F Troop' be remade into a motion picture?

If so can anyone help me with ideas for casting? I haven't thought of any myself but can anyone who reads this help me out? Thanks.

Interesting that you would pick Michael Richards as Agarn. I don't think it would work, though. Richards is more of a physical schtick actor. A better choice might be his Seinfeld co-star, Jason Alexander. I can see Alexander indignantly yelling, "Who says I'm dumb?!?"

For Parmenter, I'd prefer Jim Carrey, although he's probably too old for the role. But Carrey could easily do the clumsy pratfalls as well as a "Truman Show" naive, nice guy.

reply

Jessica Simpson? Please note that Wrangler Jane is the only intelligent competent character in the show.

reply

The problem is that Jessica has already done "Dukes of Hazzard" so I wouldn't wnat her to play Wrangler Jane. If I don't cast a "name" I will go with a total unknown. At least that's my thinking as of now.

Dan is on my short list for O'Rourke.

As far as Michael Richards --- absolutely no way. And for several reasons. One being the obvious stigma associated with him using the "N" word. But, to compound the matter, he physically isn't anything close to Larry Storch. It would be kind of like hiring Shaquille O'Neal to play Richard Pryor.

Regarding Jessica Simpson, she would have worked had she not already played Daisy Duke in "Dukes of Hazzard."

reply

Well I think my choices would have to be:

Captain Parmenter - Owen Wilson
Sgt. O'Roarke - Ian McShane
Cpl. Agarn - Sam Rockwell
Wrangler Jane - Jamie Pressly
Wild Eagle - Robert Beltran

You do realize that it would be very difficult to make this into a feature film. No matter how lighthearted the comedy is, or how well written the film is, the hekawi tribe would likely be perceived as racist.

Last I heard, the guys from Broken Lizard want to remake this into a big screen film. So, that would mean, the guys from Super Troopers would fill in the cast of F-Troop. To me, that doesn't really spell comedy...but more like a Greek tragedy.

"When the day comes we have to go to war against Utah, we're really going to kick ass, y'know?"

reply

Not necessarily. What if the Hekawi weren't as dumb as they seemed? What if they had better technology than the palefaces (although based on native materials) and just played along with the stereotypes when dealing with O'Roarke and Agarn? As soon as O'Roarke left, they'd stop the squaws hand-sewing moccasins (just for show) and head for a cave, where there's a whole machine doing all the actual work faster and cheaper. THEY'RE ripping off O'Roarke!

reply

This would be a wild cast!

Vince Vaughn - Sgt. O'Rourke
Jack Black - Corporal Agarn
Ben Stiller - Captain Parmeter
Julia Stiles - Wrangler Jane
Jonathan Winters - Wild Eagle (he's part Indian)
Will Ferrell- Dobbs
Mel Brooks - Duffy

reply

Rory955,
Mel Brooks as Duffy

reply

Unless you can come up with someone as good as Forrest Tucker and Larry Storch. There can't be a F Troop movie

reply

Cedric the Entertainer as O'Rourke??
Li'l Kim as Jane??

seriously, please leave this one alone! no remakes, I wouldn't want to even anyone with the power the idea to do this (I do realize it's just talk here) please don't taint the memory of the great F Troop!

reply

I agree with rory955 on his picks, they would work great for a movie... But it was already done. It was called "Dances with Wolves"
Compare the two shows:

Captain Parmeter is a hero and sent to a far away fort
In Kevin Costners movie the begining is the same.

Captain Parmeter tries to be freinds with Indians to stay, so does Costner

Only difference is Costner made more it realistic and dramatic

Without getting too off topic, someone on CNN made a joke this afternoon that he would go bananas if "F Troop" was made into a movie. Leonard Maltin said(sarcastically) it will most likely happen at some point or another. I sure hope Maltin was only being sarcastic in this case!

A long time ago, when we started seeing all these old TV shows turned into movies, I was thinking about what it would be like if they made an F TROOP movie. The only thing that'll be different is the Forrest Tucker character, who's more or less inspired by this good friend of mine(he pretty much had an O'Rourke-type personality). The catch is that my friend is an African-American, and I thought it would be funny that Fort Courage have a black man as Sargeant and everybody would be none the wiser(kinda like the same way they had Jewish actors play the Hekawi on the TV show) and he wouldn't draw too much attention to that fact also. When I think back at it, I could better understand why the movie version of THE WILD WILD WEST flopped. But what do I know.

guess an F-Troop movie would do very well, considering nobody born after 1970 have ever heard of it and those of us who are in love with it are sad about how shortly it lived.

I was born several years after 1970 and am not only a fan but also own the F-Troop first season DVD.

I heard of it, and I was born in 1971. I watched it in reruns when I was little.

If they do a remake of this TV series as a motion picture, it won't be ANYTHING like the original...

It will be a POLITICALLY CORRECT mess, as the jerks who control Hollywood these days will make sure that the Indians (who were portrayed as schemers and buffoons in the original TV series) are portrayed as the smart ones who get over on the "stupid" Army troops, unless of course they use African American actors to play the troops, as we all know that portraying blacks unfavorably is a big no-no in Hollywood these days. In that case, the black officers will be portrayed as the "cool" and "hip" ones, and the white subordinates will be portrayed as the blithering idiots. Welcome to Hollywood at the dawn of the 21st Century!

In my opinion, they should just leave this one alone. They have already made FAR TOO MANY awful remakes (the new word these un-original idea stealers use is "re-imagined") of classic TV shows into movies... Here's a perfect example: "The Honeymooners".

'nuff said!!!

AMEN to that.

The show was a masterpiece. One of the very few left not desecrated by modern Hollywood.

Leave it ALONE!!!

I took some of the names I saw used and rearranged them to who I think would work out in the parts of our beloved F troop.

Aykroyd - Sgt. O'Rourke - can't think of anyone better
Steve Buscemi - Corporal Agarn - he too would make a great Barney Fife
Steve Carell - Captain Parmenter - maybe jim carrey at one time because of his physical comedy, but since carell came onto the scene, he fits the bill.
Jenna Fischer - Wrangler Jane - very cute and sassy
Jim Belushi - Wild Eagle - the perfect complement to Aykroyd
Rainn Wilson - Crazy Cat - His philosopy would drive Belushi crazy
Owen Wilson - Dobbs - for no particular reason
William Macy - Duffy dry very dry humor
Vanderbilt or Hoffenmueller - Larry Joe Campbell because he is fat enough for either part

Would also enjoy seeing cameos by surviving cast members:
Berry Storch patterson diamond hampton Brooks. I know they are getting up there in years but it would be fun to see them, especially Storch, berry and paterson.

Maybe as roaring chicken, Pete the bartender, inspector general,

I loved this show. I'm 21 years old and it's one of the many shows my uncle and father taught me to enjoy. I do want to see it remade but I know that it would either a) have to be a spoof (which technically the show was already a spoof) or b) it would be politically correct. I don't want either one. I wrote an entire history paper on F Troop for my US history class last semester and my professor told me if i'd handed it in to any other professor in the college i'd probably fail because they are all pc.

Either TIME or NEWSWEEK (I don't remember which) reported in the late 1980s that an 'F Troop' movie was in the works. That was almost 20 years ago, and it obviously never happened.
A couple of people have suggested Jack Black or Jason Alexander as Agarn. That could work. And Steve Carell is a good choice as Parmenter.
The key is for someone to write a decent script. Most of these TV shows-remade-as-movies fail because the script is lousy, and the movie tries to get by on just nostalgia for the old show.
And if there is an 'F Troop' movie, I pray to God it's not one of these 'Scary Movie' type spoofs, with a bunch of gross-out humor and endless references to other movies.

reply

Somebody said young people don't like this show, and I love it. After years of hearing my father rant and rave about it, I saw it on iN2Tv I watched all the episodes and loved it. It would be a shame to remake this because it would be PC, that is why I'm sad that the Get Smart movie is being made, there can be no Craw. Oh yea, Im 15

I've got an "actor" who could play either one of these two characters:

anyone remember a film called advance to the rear? It was a film with glen ford and stella stevens about a platoon of buffon union soliders sent to guard a gold shipment from a confederate spy, stella stevens,..watching this film and then watching f troop....see lots of similarties. Great series that should stay as it is and not colorized...might as well colorize Maltese Falcon and Combat.

'Advance To The Rear' was great!

...might as well colorize Maltese Falcon and Combat! And they could colorize the begining and ending of 'The Wizard Of Oz' too! :-)

"can 'F Troop" be made into a motion picture? YES
Should F Troop be made into a motion picture? NNNNNOOOOOOO !!!!
I cant help but think of all of the classic Tv made into modern movies. McCale's Navy, Get Smart, Beverly Hilbillies... and the list goes on and on. Not one had the charm, humor ar ambiance of the original shows. Even films that were able to utilize the original casts members(ie Gilligan's Island) were at best flat. the rest ranged from un-amusing to abortions on film. Unless the Chemistry of the original cast could be duplicated, along with the writing style, then F Troop should absolutely not be made into a film. It woluld only injur the integrity of its soul.

It's been a kick reading everyone's thoughts on an "F Troop" movie.

Hi. My name is Bobby Logan. I'm the guy who is working to get the "F Troop" movie made.

Want more info? Go to my web site: www.Bobbyworks.com -- look under the "My Projects" tab.

Of the four feature films I've written and directed, there were two that I've wanted to make for years. One was a spoof of "The Exorcist" (which I did -- it's calleed "Repossessed" and starred Leslie Nielsen and Linda Blair), and the other was a feature version of "F Troop" (which was my favorite show as a kid).

It's my goal to get the financing for the "F Troop" movie in place by the end of spring, 2007.

Anyway, just wanted you all to know that I appreciate hearing your thoughts (good and bad), and to tell you that my casting thoughts are very close (and spot-on a couple of times) to some of the suggestions here.

I will be updated you here with whatever progress comes to the forefront.

Best,

Bobby Logan

Jim Belushi (or anyone like him) as the Indian chief? That would be a big mistake.

See http://www.bluecorncomics.com/2006/09/f-troop-movie.html for more discussion of this movie.

My vote for Captain Parmeter (my apologies if that's not how its spelt, not just to you, but to other "F Troop" fans,) is Topher Grace.

reply

FYI -- Topher is one of my top three for the role of Wilton Parmenter.

Bobby

P.S. Jack Black is my #1 choice for Agarn.

reply

I think Al Pacino would make for a great Chief Wild Eagle, but I doubt he could be persuaded to do it. John Goodman would be a good choice for O'Rourke. Emily Lloyd would be outstanding as Wrangler Jane.

reply

Amazing. John Goodman is my #1 choice to play O'Rourke.

You guys are very much in-tune with my way of thinking.

Regarding Wild Eagle (or any Hekawi) I would only want Native American actors to play the roles.

My choice for Wild Eagle? Graham Greene.

Bobby

reply

Hi Bobby, I've been a fan of F Troop forever, and I wish you the best of luck on the film!
One casting suggestion, it's going against your "all Native American" casting credo, and it may or may not work, but anyway.... how about Larry Storch as Roaring Chicken. He's so over the top, and he's still kicking (at least as much as Edward Everett Horton was;)). Just a thought....

Good Luck - Sam

reply

I haven't weighed in yet but my 2 cents:

John Goodman as O'Rourke: perfect. He's the one actor I can think of who would bring the same qualities to the role that Forrest Tucker brought. Aykroyd I really couldn't see in the part IMO.

I think Steve Buscemi as Agarn; the Goodman-Buscemi chemistry is terrific; not so sure about Jack Black in the role.

Topher Grace, Graham Greene-- also perfect.

I also agree that a Larry Storch cameo is a must! Preferably something where he could again display his knack for dialects/impersonation.

Regardless, Bobby, best of luck bringing this to the big screen; I think there's a definite audience for it if it is done right.

It looks like it's been almost six years since anyone has commented on this.

I think an 'F Troop' movie could work. But the key, in my opinion, is the right casting of Sergeant O'Rourke. A few people have suggested John Goodman, and I agree he has the right personality for the role. The problem is, as I write this, he's now 60 years old. Is that too old to play the part? Forrest Tucker was 46 in 1965. You want a John Goodman type, yes. But is Goodman himself now the right person for the part?

You need someone who can do comedy, who has that O'Rourke streak of larceny in him, but also has the credibility that Tucker had as a Western action star. Tucker could do more than handle the comedy. Because of his work doing dramas and Westerns, he was believable as a cavalry sergeant. He was the rugged outdoor type and looked like he belonged on an 1860s cavalry post. If 'F Troop' had been a serious drama, Tucker still could have played the part.
Is there an actor today who has Tucker's gift for comedy and his rough-hewn outdoor look? I can't think of anybody.
Vince Vaughn has the con man personality, but not the 1860s Western look or style. He feels too urban and too modern.
Will Ferrell's characters are usually clueless ("Anchorman" or "Talladega Nights"). Sergeant O'Rourke is shrewd. So Ferrell doesn't seem the type, even though he is now the right age. And he's also too modern.

Steve Carell, at 50, is probably too old now to play Captain Parmenter. It would have been a great idea ten or 15 years ago.

I hope an 'F Troop' movie gets made someday, if it's done right. If it's not, I'd rather not see it at all.
