Season 1 DVD set

Recently picked up the Season 1 DVD set. It was fun watching Branded again after about a 40 year wait! The DVD set has a couple extras: there is a Rifleman episode and an rarely seen episode from Four Star Playhouse (1955)starring David Niven, Amanda Blake, and Chuck Connors in a nice little comedy. I enjoyed Connors in an unusual, humorous, role.

The sound of the DVD set is rather tinny. Some spots are difficult to hear, then suddenly, it is loud and has echoes. Most episodes are in black & white, but the photography is sharp. There is a three part episode, "The Mission", that is in color (look for Patrick Wayne, John's son, in a small role).

Whoever authored this DVD set should look for a new line of work. It says Dastar and Marathon Music and Video on the screen but all you can find on google about Dastar is news about all the lawsuits against them. There are no chapter stops, there are only five 20 minute episodes per disc and they put a Rifleman episode on many discs. If I had wanted the Rifleman, I would have bought Rifleman DVDs. And episodes that should be in color are in black and white. They put the drum cadence as the background music on the main menu. Instead of playing once, it plays in a continous loop that will drive you crazy if you're doing something else while the dvd is in the player. And if you hit your menu button anywhere on a disc, you get nothing. This is the worst authored dvd set I've seen so far, even worse than the Twilight Zone with its low sound and defective menus.

Yeah, well, I still watch Branded manually.

Brawndo has what plants crave... it's got electrolytes.

Hey, I'm just happy to have been able to see Branded again after all these years! Now if they'll bring back Shenandoah! I bought a few episodes off the internet, but not the complete season.
Branded was a great show, but maybe just a bit after its time. Would have done better in the earlier 60's, like Rifleman.
Proud that Chuck connors comes from my home town of Brooklyn, NY!

I'm currently watching this season on DVD - from timeless media. I suspect that the editing is not brilliant - the episodes only play for 22 minutes each and for a 30 minutes slot, even allowing for commercials, that is short.

However, its great that Timeless Media are releasing shows like this.

I was brought up in the UK watching these western series and they bring back memories.

Branded is one I cannot remember ever screening in the UK but it is great to view now.

It is surprising how well the story lines stand up when viewed 45 years from their first screening.

I guess its that they deal with universal truths and problems which are as relevant today as they ever were.
