Mangosuthu Buthelezi

How many people know that the guy who portrayed King Cetshwayo was his great-grandson, who later went on to found the anti-apartheid and Zulu nationalist Inkatha Freedom Party and served as Home Secretary under Mandela in the 1990's?

Me.

reply

Me too!
The Conservative Govt. in UK, and particularly the late Lady Thatcher, were great admirers of Mr Buthelezi and his IFP policies.
He made more than one official visit to Downing Street.

reply

Probably because of his anti-communism and monarchism.

He actually also wrote a statement in the excellent book on the making of Zulu called Zulu: With Some Guts Behind It by Sheldon Hall, which is well worth buying. He said he wished the Battle of Isandlwana was portrayed instead. LOL. But he also said he cherished the experience of participating in a film with Stanley Baker and Michael Caine.

And if I recall correctly, he embraced free market economics broadly, as well as his anti-Communism,in line to an extent with Thatcher and Reagan's own thinking. Certainly his Party's policy was directly opposed to those of the ANC!
