Other films like YH and A Face in the Crowd (1957)?

It seems to me that Youngblood Hawke and A Face in the Crowd (dir. Elia Kazan, writ. Budd Shulberg, 1957) offer similar stories that feature people from the rural southern U.S. (Kentucky and Arkansas, respectively) who travel to New York for stardom only to be corrupted by the process. Can anyone think of other titles from the era that offer similar melodramatic Horatio Alger stories?

Midnight Cowboy (1969, with Joe Buck from Texas) might fit the bill. Any suggestions are welcome.
