Franciscus/Beatty/Donahue/Hardin/Reynolds

WB had fine actors such as Bill Reynolds or Ty Hardin suitable for this starring movie. Troy Donahue was at the time the biggest contract star at Warners and had made 4 Delmer Daves films at WB: A Summer Place, Parrish, Susam Slade and Rome Adventure all of which were money making hits, and Troy was a worldwide star. Why wasn't Troy cast in this film. Warren Beatty was but after 2 weeks of rehearsals refused to sign his contract and en enraged Jack Warner fired him and banned him from the Lot. James Fransiscus an elegant intelligent star and Bill Wellman's son in law stepped in at a sudden notice and did a fine job.
